Patton (1970) DVD News:

Headline: Weitz BACK on Golden Compass
8th May 2006
Posted by: Gary Gray

First he was in, then he was out, now he's back in.

Yup, Chris Weitz who was originally attached to direct the 1st part of the Phillip Pullman trilogy His Dark Materials: The Golden Compass, is now back in the directorial hotseat.

He had originally left when he felt he wouldn't be able to handle the huge amount of effects work required, and was replaced by Anand Tucker.

Who has now also left the project, he left for creative differences.

Chris Weitz had this to say about the news "Though I'm disappointed that New Line and Anand didn't end up seeing eye to eye, when I was told the job of directing 'Golden Compass' was open, there was just no way that I could pass it up."

They are thought to be still planning for a November 2007 release, but surely that's looking decidedly impossible for such a FX driven project.
