Up The Academy (1980) DVD Review:
Claiming an attempt to make the most fun out of the month with the fewest days, Warner Home Video has released six comedies which have never been released on DVD. They are all at least fifteen years old, and feature actors who are famous for other films. These six films are lesser known, and in many ways less remarkable, but they are all light viewing and worth viewing. Up the Academy is presented by Mad Magazine, but lacks the same quick wit and social satire that has made the magazine a success. Instead it is a fairly tradition teen comedy, which is also rather tame by today’s standards.
When a group of troublemakers are randomly put in the same room together at military academy, it is certain friendship. They form a band together, and the five of them make the best out of their horrible situation. Even though all of them come from different areas and lifestyles, they have one thing in common; they hate military school.
Featuring Ralph Macchio in his first film role, these group of boys have a number of things to worry about. There is the drill sergeant that sends a chill into the air when he’s around, the obviously gay instructor who appears in their bedroom at odd times, and Barbara Bach as a weapons instructor who grabs her student’s attention in every class regardless of what she’s teaching.
This film is compared to being in the tradition of Stripes and Police Academy, but the humor is obviously more tame. Because the film involves younger kids it doesn’t have nearly the same level of trouble as these other films. It has its moments of humor, but mostly the film just feels dated.
All of the films in the set of new releases are just lucky to be released on DVD for the first time because of their obscure nature and special features is far too much to expect. There is a trailer of the film and nothing else. The quality of the film is even sub-par, although I imagine it is a great improvement of the film from any other versions floating around on VHS.
