Basic Instinct 2 (2006) DVD Review:

Nearly every film with the smallest amount of controversy is guaranteed to release an unrated version when it comes time for home entertainment release. For some films this is actually valid, and the director was forced to make sacrifices in order to keep the rating down. Basic Instinct 2 is counting on audiences assuming that the unrated version will have more sex, but the truth is that Sharon Stone was paid a very large sum of money to make this film. As blunt as it may sound, I’m sure the studio made sure to get their money’s worth. Meaning, as much as her salary was I am certain that they wanted every bit of nudity to make it into the final cut of the film, so the DVD doesn’t end up being consequentially different aside from a few suggestive scenes mostly involving dialogue.

Sharon Stone returns to her career defining role as Catherine Tramell, the sexy and possibly deadly American novelist who is infamous for having her fiction stories turn into reality. When a professional athlete is murdered, London psychiatrist Dr. Michael Glass is asked to analyze Catherine as a potential suspect, a situation which seems more pleasing to her than upsetting. Soon the two begin the cat and mouse game of seduction and search for truth. As Glass finds himself slipping away from professionalism, others begin to die and he is forced to question the innocence of the woman he is allowing to seduce him.

The basic premise is the same, but something is missing. It is more than just Michael Douglas, although his presence is sorely missed. What seems to be missing is an ingredient that has been lost in erotic thrillers for years. Audiences have lost patience for films like Basic Instinct that take a patient viewing and an interest in the suspense. Instead suspense has been replaced with sad filler scenes in between the erotic bits that never quite carry any life. I would say that some films should never have sequels, but after the sequels I have seen these past two summers I am tempted to say that nearly every film should be left to stand on its own.

The R-Rated DVD has a director’s commentary with Michael Caton-Jones, as well as a “Between the Sheets” featurette. The filmmakers joke about a third film in the series. At least I hope it was a joke. The unrated DVD has these two features as well as nine deleted scenes that include many filler scenes and one in which Catherine speaks about her first lesbian experience. There is also an alternate ending, but I wouldn’t rush out for the features any faster than I would rush to see the film itself.
