Fear Factor: Season One DVD Review:
When Fear Factor came out it was unique to the rest of the reality shows that were coming out at the time, and it wasn’t because of the gross things that contestants had to eat. The show was unique because each episode features new contestants, instead of the same competitors week after week as shows like Survivor was set up. This made it much easier to enjoy the show on television because it didn’t matter if you missed an episode, but it also makes the show far less entertaining on DVD. There is no reason to watch the show in order because each one starts over fresh, so the only real difference in having the show on DVD rather than on reruns is the fact that the commercials are taken out.
Although having the commercials removed is the main reason for buying this show on DVD, it is also more apparent how much of the footage is repeated in order to build suspense. The trickery of the editing room is much easier to examine when you are in control of the remote and can see what happened in whatever speed you choose. Hopefully most people realize by now that just because we call them reality shows, doesn’t mean everything you see is real.
The first season has been played countless times on television re-runs, but nearly every episode is a good one. They went all out on season one to ensure the show survived and that includes some great stunts and disgusting feats. The funny thing is that the contestants are completely surprised by the gross and scary tasks on the pilot, but by the second episode they all seem to know what is coming. That takes away some of the fun, but each staged stunt still brings some squirms from viewers and contestants alike.
There are only nine episodes in season one, possibly due to the large amount of money and planning that must go into each episode. All nine episodes are placed on two discs in a bulky and unnecessary package. Instead of a double disc case or double-sided discs, the DVDs are placed in regular cases and into a box, which takes up more room than any nine episodes should. To top it off, the only special feature is a preview of season two of Fear Factor, which has already been seen dozens of times and has no impact at this point. Would it have been that difficult to make a short featurette showing the planning that goes into each stunt?
