Final Destination 3 (2006) Synopsis:

Set six years after the original "Final Destination" film, the latest installment in the series centers around a high school senior who has a premonition of a fatal roller coaster accident involving herself and all her friends. When the premonition proves true, those who have "cheated death" and survived the accident are forced to deal with the repercussions of escaping their fate.

Final Destination 3 (2006) DVD Review:

When the invention of television stole audiences away from movie theaters, all sorts of tricks were tried to get people to come see a movie. There were raffles and dish nights, among an assortment of interactive viewing experiments. 3-D and IMAX are two familiar gimmicks which have survived, but mostly the attempts were not very successful, which is why I am immediately skeptical of similar gimmicks for home entertainment. Many DVDs offer interactive viewing, where you can reach extras while watching the film as soon as an icon appears. Final Destination 3 may be the first film to go even further with the viewer interaction which allows you to change the course of the film and design new character deaths. This may sound interesting, but it also seems a bit desperate. As entertaining as the idea is, if the film were better audiences wouldn’t feel the need to change it, which is why this feature is perfect for a sub-par film like Final Destination 3. It falls very close to Jaws 3-D, I’m afraid.

Just as in the first two films, Final Destination 3 starts with a premonition of death that becomes reality. Wendy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and Kevin (Ryan Merriman) narrowly escape death on a roller coaster along with a group of their classmates. They realize soon after that they can’t cheat death, and it begins to hunt them down and kill them in the most gruesome possible way. It is a splatter film which has far less inspiration than the first was, but less exploitation than the second film.

Perhaps the biggest selling point of this DVD is the Thrill Ride Edition, which allows the viewer to make choices that will ultimately decide the fate of certain characters. Most of the time the characters are going to die either way, but your choice will determine how they die, or how painful it will be. Some of the choices don’t even seem to make a difference. In one choice the only difference is the amount of time it takes for the character to die. Still, you have to give them credit for taking the time to create an option like this. It may change the direction that horror films goes in entirely, or it could just fade like many gimmicks before it.

As well as the Choose-Their-Fate feature and the original theatrical version, there are also a number of other special features in this two-disc package. There is a feature commentary with director and co-writer James Wong as well as co-writer Glen Morgan and DP Robert McLachlan. Disc two has a number of features including an animated short, “It’s All Around You”, which is a post 9/11 paranoia film about death statistics. It is humorous as well as slightly discomforting for most of the short. The featurette, “Dead Teenager Movie” is a look at New Line horror films with a beginning sequence that is of Roger Ebert talking about the first in the Final Destination trilogy. Along with the featurette is a full documentary about the making of Final Destination 3, a deleted scene that is well executed and completely unnecessary, and a number of promotional materials.
