Inside Man (2006) Synopsis:

Inside Man is the story of a tough cop, Detective Frazier, who matches wits with a clever bank robber, Dalton, in a tense hostage drama. As the dangerous cat-and-mouse game unfolds, a wild card emerges: Madaline, a power broker with a hidden agenda, who injects even more instability into an already volatile situation.

Inside Man (2006) DVD Review:

Nearly as surprising as Woody Allen’s dramatic venture Math Point was, Spike Lee took a chance with a large studio blockbuster. With a remarkable cast of talented actors willing to take a chance on the film, Lee manages to put aside his usual issues of race and dive head first into a crime caper. It has all of the style that the director has perfected over the years along with a fantastic script by Russell Gewirtz that will keep you guessing until the very end. Inside Man is a crowd pleaser without being a mindless mess that most heist films have become lately. Lee keeps the film tightly about a cat-and-mouse game between a good guy and a bad guy, but the real trick comes in keeping the audience pleased when both become likable to the audience.

Nothing is what it seems in this heist film, even from the beginning where we are introduced to the criminal mastermind (Clive Owen), who assures us that he has planned the perfect bank robbery. This perfect bank robbery turns into a hostage situation, which brings a number of powerful people to the situation. Denzel Washington plays the stylishly dressed detective who is determined to get to the bottom of the robbery, and Jodie Foster is a power broker who has been sent to handle a certain situation involved in the bank robbery. Also in the cast are Willem Dafoe and Christopher Plummer, making a great cast of familiar faces.

The Inside Man is a thinker. There is some suspense, and a small amount of action, but the film’s success comes from the mind games that the two leads play with each other. The dialogue becomes the star in many sequences, and the script by Gewirtz rises to the challenge. Although there is little action, the script manages to stay entertaining enough during the slower points of the film. They even managed to work in some of the racial issues which normally find a place in the theme of Lee’s films.

The DVD features a great commentary track by Spike Lee, who is full of energy. He seems to be having so much fun on the commentary track that he often forgets to give any technical information, but it is a nice break from the usually dull commentary by the director. There is also a quick featurette in which Washington and Lee talk about the fact that they have collaborated on four films together, the making of Inside Man, and over twenty-five minutes of deleted scenes.
