RV (2006) DVD Review:

At the heart of RV, behind all of the silly and predictable troubles that come with recreational vehicles, is a pleasant family film where everyone learns a lesson. What truly makes RV a film to praise is its ability to limit the use of antagonistic characters. Jeff Daniels heads up a family of extremely friendly fellow campers that are avoided simply because of their annoying kindness, but these characters are more true to life than villains are allowed to be in films. Having some reality grounded in a film filled with absurd situations works far better than the many family films that seem to have rival families to add to the circus. Add a great cast of supporting actors, many of which have strange connections through popular television shows (Weeds, Arrested Development), and RV is far better than many family road trip films that have come before. There’s even room for a Deliverance sodomy joke.

Robin Williams is Bob Munro, a hard working executive who has been promising a vacation in Hawaii to his family when his boss (played by Arrested Development’s Will Arnett) insists that he pitch a business merger to a soda company in Colorado. In a desperate attempt to keep the family vacation intact, Bob rents an RV for the family to travel to Colorado in, without telling them the real reason for a change in plans. The usual disaster happen along the way, but the family also begins to bond together. One of the things the family is able to unite on is escaping from a fellow RV family, led by Jeff Daniels as the head of an overly friendly family.

Nobody seems to understand how to make cheerful and pleasant films like Barry Sonnenfeld, who is able to keep films from becoming too hokey while still preserving the light quality in the entertainment. RV is a great deal of fun for the whole family without falling into the pit-traps that most family films are plagued with. Family films have an awful tendency to appear sloppy with the knowledge that mostly children will take the film seriously, and they don’t pay as much attention. RV is a tight film, although it definitely remains as entertaining as other family films which have been more successful.

The DVD is packed with bonus features, including a director’s commentary with a Telestrator, which makes it much more interesting at times. There is a gag reel which is predictably filled with humorous Robin Williams moments. Along with extra singing footage and a number of story-to-film comparisons, there are five featurettes which were shot in HD. There is a featurette on the set with Barry Sonnenfeld, as well as one about Robin Williams in a family film, JoJo starring in another movie in between her music career and a special featurette about poop. There is also a short one about RVs.
