The Simpsons: The Complete Eighth Season DVD Review:

Season eight of The Simpsons was a great season, filled with a number of classic episodes and numerous important cameos, including the late Johnny Cash as a fox guide in Homer’s hallucination episode. The commitment Matt Groening has made to release each episode chronologically on DVD along with commentary has kept each season held to a certain standard which seems raised with each released season. Now with a feature length film on the way, it seems that this is one cartoon family which will still be around for a while. Season Eight takes us back to 1996-1997 and all of the pop culture references that fill the cartoon.

Season eight is filled with all sorts of important moments, including an Emmy-winning song, “The Spring in Springfield, from Bart After Dark, the episodes which has Bart working at an after-hours club. Lisa has her first romance with Nelson of all people in Lisa’s Date With Density, Homer gets a new job and moves the family out of Springfield in You Only Move Twice, and Milhouse’s parents get divorced in A Milhouse Divided. We learn more about supporting characters in season eight as well. Hurricane Neddy gives some insight to Ned Flanders after he has a break-down, we find out that Principal Skinner is even lonelier than it seemed when he starts a relationship with Bart’s teacher in Grade School Confidential, and we get Reverend Lovejoy’s history when Marge finds out that he has given up caring about his congregation. It is also a big season for Mr. Burns; he goes broke, gets trapped in a cabin with Homer, and finds out that he has a long-lost son, voiced by Rodney Dangerfield.

Season eight is available in two different packaging options; a limited edition Maggie Simpson box, and an illustrated gatefold digipak. The package has a photo album style booklet inside, with the usual show description as well as other bits of information about each episode. It is especially nice to be able to find out who the guest voices are. There are twenty five episodes on four discs, including the Halloween episode and the Simpsons Spin-off Showcase. Each episode has a commentary track with Matt Groening and a number of other Simpsons VIPs. There are deleted scenes on twenty-one of the twenty five episodes in season eight. There are a number of other special features in the package, including a featurette about The Simpsons House, animatics and storyboards with optional audio commentary, a sketch gallery. There are also promotional spots with Matt Groening.
