The Weird Al Show: The Complete Series DVD Review:
The silly over-the-top acting style in The Weird Al Show is usually only seen children programming and Jim Carrey comedies. In fact, it is a children’s program, shown on Saturday mornings when it was on air. His humor is silly enough that it would make sense for him to host a children’s show, but many of his parody routines will go over their heads, which is probably why the show didn’t last very long. It is somewhat like watching Bill Nye the Science Guy without learning anything important. Where the show is successful is in the cartoons and other clips which stray outside of the cave set that seems plagued with bad acting. Al’s humor, although weird, is often on the mark when making fun of some random pop-culture icon, but his goofy persona is too much for a host.
There are a number of surprising guests to visit Weird Al’s almost Pee Wee Playhouse, including The Barenaked Ladies on the first episode. There are other occasional musical guests, such as Hanson, but Weird Al makes certain to play a few of his own as well. Each episode there is a lesson for the kids, which is usually taught through Al’s own mistakes that make him look like a bumbling fool, however friendly. There are more than a few other traditions each episode, such as cartoons and strange visitors, such as Drew Carey and Dick Clark.
Weird Al’s cartoons, such as “The Adventures of Fatman”, are often strange enough to get a few chuckles, but mostly the entertainment is meant to weird rather than good. This explains much of the show. Al just wants to be weird, even when that means that he makes little sense. Watching this show means expecting the unexpected. His hamster has a special relationship with him and he has a superhero neighbor, but the inventions are what really make him strange in his cave-like existence.
This Saturday morning television program didn’t last long, even with children watching. There are thirteen episodes in the series, and each of them has a commentary available as well. The commentary has Weird Al and other various cast and crew, but there is enough strange happenings in the show without the extra commentary. Only huge fans, if there are any, will find themselves wanting listen to each commentary. There is also a great deal of artwork in the special features. There is concept art from the Fatman cartoon as well as other concept art galleries. The animated storyboards are somewhat interesting, although the most fun of the special features is the show theme karaoke. If only the theme were worth having karaoke for.
