The Hard Corps (2006) Synopsis:

Jean-Claude will be playing a Combat Vet who's just spent the last 3 years fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq, who is hired to be a bodyguard to a former World Heavyweight Boxing champ to protect him and his family against a Rap Music Mogul. He sets up a team called "The Hard Corps", complications arise when the boxer suspects that his sister may be in love with the bodyguard.

The Hard Corps (2006) DVD Review:

Jean-Claude Van Damme found his way into the action world because of his ability to do the splits as well as any woman right before he snapped a villain’s arm in two during fight scenes. The films that he found himself in were visceral and enjoyable, though hardly filled with any substantial issues. As he grows older, the films have begun to see a shift, although he continues to make them as consistent as any large star that still has films released theatrically. Although Van Damme still looks young, he has very few fight scenes left in him, which makes The Hard Corps difficult to enjoy. There is so much focus on issues of war that there isn’t any time for action. By the time Van Damme starts to fight, the film is nearly over.

The Hard Corps doesn’t have any real fight scenes until well over halfway through the film, because the focus is on a far more serious issue than anyone involved knows how to handle appropriately. Van Damme is Patrick Sauvage, a former Desert Storm Special Forces soldier who is dealing with his own personal struggles in a veteran hospital when he is offered a job to protect a retired boxer. Wayne Barclay (Razaaq Adoti) is a retired World Heavyweight who has made some enemies that want him dead. Despite the constant help Barclay has offered to the community around him, a grudge might kill him, and his sister (Vivica A. Fox) hires Sauvage to protect him.

The heavy-handed theme running through this one-dimensional action film weighs down any chance for the mindless entertainment we used to appreciate from Van Damme. Flashbacks to war are riddled throughout the film, making the mood of the action far too disturbing. Whenever the action is good, it usually doesn’t last long, and Van Damme’s mobility has slowed as well, which basically means that this is not a Van Damme movie in the traditional sense. That being said, there is really no draw to watch it. Most of the film is needless melodrama and some of the worst chemistry I have ever seen on film, between Van Damme and the worsening Vivica A. Fox.

The DVD is void of special features, aside for a few trailers. The menu is simply a photo, the same as the cover art, and there is nothing else of worth on the DVD. It is a weak package for a weak film.
