I Am A Sex Addict DVD Review:
The cover of I Am a Sex Addict has the bold claim, “A Film by Caveh Zahedi. Caveh is the filmmaker, but he is also the subject of the film and the narrator. Caveh attempts to recreate a ten year period of his life with awful reenactment, some home footage and a lot of voice over from Caveh as he has a self aware confession to the audience of his slow journey into complete addiction. Caveh has actors play each of his girlfriends and he reenacts many scenes with them, but he should have hired an actor to play himself as well. Caveh’s awkward delivery and wide-eyed stare makes him look like a deer stuck in headlights as soon as the camera is on him.
The film stops on occasion to bring the audience in on problems that occurred during the reenactment of Caveh’s journey. At first the film stops to inform the audience that he had accidentally hired a French porn star to be the actress reenacting his French wife. The second time the film stops it is to tell the audience that one of the actresses playing a girlfriend would not shoot the scenes of simulated blow jobs. The scene is not entirely important to the story and the time spent on humiliating the actress seems to speak wonders about Caveh. His controlling ways leak onto the shoot and into the film although he makes several claims in the film about his own sensitivity to women. I found it difficult to watch his quiet arrogance for the remainder of the film however fascinating the examination of his addiction was.
Although the film deals with Caveh’s gradual addiction to his prostitution fetish, most of the emphasis is on the way it affects his relationships with the women he is involved with. Although actors play them in the film, and often very melodramatically so, Caveh pauses the film for a moment once the women are romantically removed in the storyline to show us home footage of the real person. These are nearly the most real thing in the film, until the very end. Once Caveh begins attending a Sex Addicts support group the footage is obviously of real sex addicts, because they don’t seem to be acting in the way that every scene before has been obviously filled with.
Caveh’s narration often brings us back to a shot of him standing in a room awkwardly telling the story. The fact that he is standing in a tuxedo hints at a happy ending as well as explaining his nervous demeanor. With this information it is much easier to relax and enjoy the humor in some of the situations Caveh finds himself in. The front cover claims the film to be “a compulsively true comedy”. It seems to make more sense that this is a truly compulsive comedy, but either way there is some humor to be found in this dreadfully uncomfortable topic.
The DVD has an inside look at the shooting of several key scenes in the film, which also all involve drugs or sex in some way. There is the scene in which Caveh goes to a prostitute in a hotel, the scene where he takes ecstasy with one of his girlfriends, and a look at the filming of the mushroom scene.
