The Lake House (Il Mare) (2006) DVD Review:

I miss the days when romantic comedies used to be so endearing. When Harry Met Sally, Sleepless in Seattle, While You Were Sleeping; these are just a few of the last generation of sweet and sophisticated, albeit somewhat sappy romantic comedies. There were plenty before, even dating all the way back to the screwball comedies of the thirties, but with films like There’s Something About Mary came a raunchy quality mixed with the romance as long as comedy was involved. In recent years there have been a number of successful romantic comedies, such as Wedding Crasher and The 40-Year-Old Virgin, but they have transitioned into a sillier and larger comedy style, even when the romance stays the same. It seems that the only way to retain the respectful romance is to see a romantic drama, and hope that it has a happy ending.

The Lake House has a certain timeless quality to it, which is ironic considering the issue of time within the film is so predominant and the year(s) in which the film takes place is mentioned countless times. While films like Wedding Crashers and There’s Something About Mary may have taken over the comedic elements of romance, films like The Notebook and The Lake House carry on the tradition of romance itself. The Lake House asks the audience to suspend disbelief in a large way, and only someone who wants to see the romance will be likely to accept some of the turns the plot takes.

The more that the two romantic leads can be kept apart in a film, the greater the satisfaction when they are finally united/reunited, and The Lake House seems to take its cue from Sleepless in Seattle, only instead of just distance separating them, there is also time. Dr. Kate Forster (Sandra Bullock) decides to rent a Lake House to get away. She begins to receive letters through the mailbox from a man named Alex Wyler, an architect who claims to be living in the same house as her. They finally realize that they are living in the same house in different years. He is living there in 2004, and she is in 2006, and through the mailbox they are able to communicate. The closer they become, the more determined they are to meet each other, which means a two year wait and questions if it is at all possible.

The DVD is sadly missing any special features of consequence. There are a number of deleted scenes with some outtakes inserted as well, but most of them are insignificant. The scenes are mostly filler and even the outtakes seem as though they would be funnier to the cast and crew than anyone who bought or rented the DVD. There is also a theatrical trailer, but what is really missing from the film is a commentary track with writer David Auburn and director Alejandro Agresti.
