Behind Enemy Lines II: Axis Of Evil (2006) Synopsis:

Navy SEALS, headed by Lt. Bobby James, are dispatched to North Korea on a covert mission, all in an effort to take out a missile site

Behind Enemy Lines II: Axis Of Evil (2006) DVD Review:

Often the problem with sequels is that they are generally just rehashing what has already been done and they end up under-intellectualized. Behind Enemy Lines tries to go the exact opposite direction in the first five minutes of the film when there is a barrage of narration informing the audience on many political facts. We are supposed to believe that these facts are important although there is an instinctual longing to just ignore it, knowing that none of it will matter once the gunplay begins.

Unfortunately it seems to take a while to get to that also. We are immediately informed of the crisis that the United States is in when a missile is discovered in North Korea, but as urgent as they make this seem we are bogged down immediately by flashbacks of our hero’s training. Although the training is usually the most entertaining portion of many war films, this isn’t really the type of film where it should be. Our focus is shifted back and forth because they couldn’t find any other place to cram in background. The film is basically taken from a conspiracy theory about a mushroom cloud which appeared in North Korea in 2004. Behind Enemy Lines II would have you believe that this mushroom cloud was a missile site which was successfully destroyed, as is the mission in the film. A team of Navy Seals are deployed in North Korea, but the mission is called off after only a few soldiers have jumped and they are stranded in a hostile country, but their numbers are far fewer than needed.

If you were to pause at nearly any point in the film, the picture would probably be impressive. The photography looks great, except for the fact that it is difficult to actually see it through most of the jarring shaky scenes. The camera is so loose that most of the action becomes uncomfortable when it should be an entertaining quality of the film, especially considering this is an action film.

The DVD has a couple of featurettes split up on each side of the double sided disc. On the side which contains the widescreen version of the film there is a featurette about the conspiracies which inspired the film’s script. There is also an on-set featurette on the full screen side of the DVD. The DVD has a commentary track with director James Dodson as well.
