Save The Last Dance 2 (2006) Synopsis:

Continuing the story of the original film, Sara (Izabella Miko) follows her dream and becomes a student at Juilliard. As she is excels and becomes a star pupil, Sara becomes torn between her love for traditional ballet and her passion for the urban street rhythms of hip-hop, complicated further by her new love, hip-hop musician Miles (Columbus Short). When pushed to make a choice, will she follow the path of the tried and true or will she take a risk and dance into uncharted territory?

Save The Last Dance 2 (2006) DVD Review:

We are filled in with all of the necessary filler details in an opening monologue. As our new actress, Izabella Miko, who is supposed to be an old character, Sarah, with just a slight unexplained accent, explains that her boyfriend from the first film is busy studying and they decided to see other people. Then she quickly moves to other discussion, quick to keep the focus on the blond dancer and away from the first film. It feels like the filmmakers would like us to remember the original film long enough to put the DVD in the player, but after that see the film as a completely different story.

Although fans might be upset by the fact that the relationship which the first film was based on is over, she is quickly given another partner. This wouldn’t be so bad if they didn’t quickly pair her into another interracial relationship. The first film used the relationship to bridge Sarah’s ballet with her urban atmosphere’s hip-hop, but this film has its work cut out for it. Sarah already arrogantly thinks she knows all about hip-hop and has to be showed the ways even more, once again by an attractive African American man.

Perhaps the most inspired portion of the film is the hip-hop course that Sarah takes, because it takes a deeper look into what hip-hop is than ballet is ever really investigated in this film, perhaps knowing the audience’s likeliness to relate to one and not the other. Although she is studying ballet at Juilliard, she manages to take a class in hip-hop as well, so that she can incorporate it with her ballet later on. The only problem is when her nightlife hip-hop dancing gets in the way of her traditional ballet dancing.

Special features include a featurette with interviews from many of the cast and crew about the film. It’s not nearly as pathetic as the trailer of the original Save the Last Dance film as the other special feature.
