Drop Dead Gorgeous DVD Review:

The evening is opened by Ted Hardwick as “Teddy Towne” who opens with a lame Bush attack that isn’t even as much a joke as it is a political statement. His humor comes at a fast pace but it isn’t that funny. Even though there are many laughs from the audience, I don’t think I laughed once. He even sings a song during the routine and after the technical difficulties I just wanted the routine to end. Alex Borostein joins him in the song and it becomes a duet that leads into her comedy routine.

Once Borostein gets to her comedy she begins immediately with racy jokes and as offensive language as she can stir up, but there isn’t too much humor outside of the shock value. It isn’t intelligent or even thought-provoking, but simply entertaining to see how many times she can say the word “vagina” in the first five minutes of her routine. As if this isn’t enough she even goes as far as gesturing and providing plenty of disgusting visuals. Perhaps it is dangerous for me to even muse upon this thought, but I couldn’t help but feel that she were trying to be extremely offensive just to prove that she could fit into the boy’s club of comedy. The battle of sexes in comedy seems to always be fought with sex jokes, which is unfortunate considering the more intelligent comedy that is out there.

I might be off on this examination of her comedy. She may just be an extremely raunchy person naturally, but I would just rather see a comedy routine that didn’t have a woman smelling her own fingers, looking down at her crotch. I don’t need that visual even if she is on Family Guy. Even when she moves on to some funnier material she manages to bring it back to talking about her mother’s bowel movement, which I’m certain you have guessed, she doesn’t describe so respectfully. Most all of the comedy eventually returns to the same raunchy humor, and whether or not you find that sort of thing funny will determine whether or not the entire DVD is worth your time.

The special features included extended credits with the entire closing song, but the real highlight is a tour of The Family Guy offices. It is horrible quality video and Alex is chewing most of the time that she is giving the tour. There is far more time spent looking at the junk food in the offices than anything really important, but fans of the show will appreciate the inside look.
