Material Girls (2006) DVD Review:

Hilary Duff seems to be going through the age that has been the death of many careers. She is no longer cute, and she is growing into something, but it is almost unrecognizable from what she was before. The same thing happened to Macaulay Culkin and a dozen other actors. They usually reappear after the growing pains have ceased, but instead of taking a break, or focusing on a music career, Hilary Duff has brought her sister into the mix as well. The awkwardly aging Hilary Duff and her sister’s equally upsetting acting skills are just the tip of the iceberg of a disturbing pair of heroines.

The beginning of the film goes into great lengths to create a fantasy world for the sisters to live in. It is so disgustingly cliché that anyone over the age of thirteen is more likely to laugh than buy the stupidity of what they set up. Ava (Haylie Duff) is dating an actor who stars on a popular night-time-soap (an obvious The OC reference), and Tanzie (Hilary Duff) can’t step into a club without being asked if she wants to watch Tara Reid and Fred Durst do karaoke. Ever since they inherited their father’s make-up company they belong in a fantasy world where everything is perfect and cliché and predictable. Just as predictable is the next twist, which of course leaves them penniless and forced to make money on their own for the first time. This fantasy world also asks us to believe that Tanzie is more interested in going to college and watching educational programs about cosmetics than partying like a rich kid.

The absurdness of the ridiculous world that these real-life-sisters create would be humorous if it wasn’t so obnoxious. There are holes scattered throughout the plot, flashy and often just bad transitions, and distractingly annoying actors in nearly every scene. I’m certain that there are some redeeming qualities within the film, but I had a hard time seeing them through all of the bad decisions. The worst was creating two characters who we are supposed to sympathize with because they are only getting $60 million because of a scandal.

Just as bad are the predictable special features. Just as anyone would expect, there is a music video from Hilary Duff, as well as a featurette about the sisters. The only real redeeming feature is the director’s commentary, because someone needed to answer for this atrocity.
