So NoTORIous - The Complete Series DVD Review:
The new trend for washed up celebrities is to star in a show that makes fun of their celebrity. Once they have fallen into the joke category, and the only time people discuss them is to get laughs at their expense, they decide to make a show that makes fun of their new weight or bad publicity. This sad selling of the last threads of dignity not only makes matters worse for them, but it usually never works. It is like these celebrities would rather be infamous rather than forgotten. Nobody has cared about Tori Spelling in a long time, but she would have us believe that she is still living a difficult life of countless people interested in spreading bad press about her in her show So Notorious.
The problem with the basic concept of the show is that Tori Spelling is not a popular target for the media like she makes herself out to be. I can’t remember the last time I heard gossip about her the way Paris Hilton, Britney Spears, or any other joke celebrities dominate the slander magazines. Nobody cares about Tori Spelling and her horrendously bad acting even playing herself makes her that much more unlikable. It isn’t even worth making fun of her because her celebrity has become so inconsequential. Even this show seems insignificant, as it is horribly created. The acting is bad, the scripts are bad, and the production values look on par with a cheap adult film.
The saving grace of some of the other failed celebrity burn-out television shows was the supporting actors, but each one in this show is so predictable that it just makes matter worse. There is the predictable snippy attractive best friend who always comes with the gay male friend. Loni Anderson plays Tori’s mother, which is a role designed to make us feel bad for the spoiled actress. She is a cliché bad mother who treats Tori as insignificant in the child flashbacks and even when she is older. Her mother doesn’t even know her own daughter because she was raised by the hired help, and her father only appears through intercom.
The two disc has the nine episodes, as well as a DVD exclusive episode. There are episode commentaries with Tori Spelling and producers, deleted scenes, cast interviews, outtakes and a few other features that nobody in their right mind will watch.
