Jackie Chan's Police Story (1987) Synopsis:

Kevin Chan (aka Jackie) is a Hong-Kong cop, who scores his first big hit by virtually single-handedly capturing and arresting a big drug- lord. Of course, the drug-lord isn't too happy about this, and frames Kevin with the murder of another cop (who happened to be on the take). Kevin has to clear his name, whilst keeping himself from getting killed or arrested, and keeping his girlfriend from leaving him.

Jackie Chan's Police Story (1987) DVD Review:

One of Jackie Chan’s earlier action films, Police Story is less focused on Jackie Chan’s remarkable ability to move and perform stunts, which actually makes for a much stronger film than some of his later work. As well as starring in the cop film, this was Chan’s second film as a director as well. Combining humor with action, Chan is like a hybrid of Harold Lloyd and Bruce Lee, providing entertainment in each scene. There is more broken glass in each action sequence than is usually in an entire film, and often the stunts are so convincing that it requires numerous viewings to try and figure out how they can put their face through a plane of glass, fake or not.

As with many Jackie Chan films he plays a cop, and he finds himself framed for murder when he stops a notorious criminal. He is a model police officer for the city and put in charge of watching a witness for the case who also happens to be the criminal boss’s girlfriend. After escaping many attempted assassinations he is simply framed for the murder of another cop. This puts him on the wrong side of the law and hunted by organized criminals, so he must go out on his own to try and prove his innocence and put the bad guys in jail.

Police Story is exactly what it claims to be; a cop movie. There are all of the expected elements including dirty cops, a lone detective who is framed, a beautiful witness that needs protecting and plenty of action, but there are a few unexpected elements as well. There are extended sequences of silly slapstick humor, and gags which are drawn to their full capacity, which is a strange but nice break from the nonstop action that takes up the rest of the film. Men fly through windshields while Jackie Chan hits, kicks and even uses a gun. It has all of the elements of a great action movie, including an unbelievable car chase down the side of a hill covered in small shacks. By the end of the stunt the cars are completely destroyed and more action piles on without a pause.

The Special Collector’s Edition DVD features numerous rare deleted scenes as well as an alternate opening and ending. Although this is nice footage to have if you are a fan of the film, it doesn’t drastically change anything in the story. There is also a commentary track, but sadly Chan is missing. There is, however, Rush Hour director Brett Ratner and Asian film expert Bey Logan, but as entertaining a commentary as they give would not be able to compete with the director/star on the track. Sadly Chan seems to be missing from the DVD except for a conversation with him in a short featurette. There is a tribute to him and the stunts, but most of these features are about him rather than including him.
