In Her Line Of Fire (2006) DVD Review:
The best and worst thing about the advent of digital technology is the way that it has come with an increase in independent and low budget films. Suddenly a science fiction or action film can be made for much less money, with only quality to sacrifice thanks to cheap digital effects. Unfortunately in the case of In Her Line of Fire, it isn’t just the effects which are bad. There are so many offensively bad elements to the film that it becomes frustrating to think a film which would have cost more money might have taken more effort in a better script and actors who can deliver a line and convincingly play their roles.
The script is so awful that two unrelated characters refer to the vie president of the United States as the second most powerful man in the world. Not only is that an asinine statement but the fact that it was placed in the script to be said by several characters just shows that there is no distinctions between characters when a bad writer is writing. The direction is just as incoherent and the tone of many scenes is strange because of it. Many characters deliver lines as if they are in a comedy and Mariel Hemingway is an unbelievable action star, unable to even hold the larger guns while they are being discharged without losing control of her arms.
As bad as the script, acting and special effects are in the film, it is Mariel Hemingway in action which is the least believable. She is supposed to be an ex-soldier who used to fight alongside the Vice President. Now she is secret service and when the Vice President’s plane goes down in a remote South Pacific island she must protect him from mercenaries. The only problem is that she doesn’t run like a soldier, doesn’t punch like a solider, doesn’t throw like one, and she can’t even fire a gun properly. Without any of these qualifications, what is it that is supposed to make her a good action star?
