Cowboy Del Amor (2006) Synopsis:
Texan cowboy turned professional Cupid Ivan Thompson finds hopeful Mexican wives for disillusioned American men. Whether it's "love at first sight" or a business deal, salty tall-tale-teller and master of self-deprecating humor, Ivan attempts to lasso hungry hearts into successful cross-cultural marriage matches. The men are in for a few surprises...
Cowboy Del Amor (2006) DVD Review:
Ivan Thompson is a matchmaker of sorts, pairing lonely American men with Mexican women for the price of $3,000 which gets them a trip into Mexico to interview countless women willing to marry. The film begins with the self proclaimed “Cowboy Cupid” taking Rick, an ex-Marine long-distance truck driver, to find a wife. They stay in a Mexican hotel and place an ad in the local paper. Before long they are interviewing women willing to marry Rick. This is Ivan’s business and he claims to be an expert on pairing American men with Mexican women although he wasn’t able to keep his own Mexican/American marriage alive.
Ivan started his business after he was introduced to a Mexican woman who was related to a friend of his. She lied about how many children she had and before Ivan knew it he had a house full of children. They both state how good a situation it was for them, and Ivan still keeps a relationship with the children on a minimal level, but this doesn’t change the fact that they are divorced. It is almost as if the argument for the business is somewhat diminished unless marriage is seen as a temporary solution for loneliness which may not last. If this is the case might it not have been better for Ivan to wait and find someone who might have stuck around longer than his ex-wife did, now seeming suspiciously like a scheme to get into the United States. Ivan frequently receives hate mail from Americans angered by Ivan’s pairing of Americans with Mexicans, bringing even more people into the country, but the film is best enjoyed without thinking too hard on the social or even logical issues in the film. It is best enjoyed because of the remarkably enjoyable character Ivan is and as a simple examination of loneliness, regardless of whether it seems right or not.
Even when the match seems to work decently enough there are plenty of awkward reservations by the families of the couples involved. There must also be some cultural gaps for the Mexican women coming to the States, but this isn’t ever addressed directly although the uncomfortable silences are there. Ivan doesn’t seem to have any problems when he moves to Mexico.
Realizing that Ivan is the reason the film is entertaining, the special features have an assortment of “Ivanisms”, which are basically just ridiculous statements that he made which were left out of the film. There are also some extra scenes with Ivan’s mail and his reply, read directly from his own book, and a story about revenge he tells while cooking pancakes. There is also a commentary track with director/producer Michele Ohayon and an assortment of others.
