The Puffy Chair (2006) Synopsis:

"The Puffy Chair"--nominated for two Independent Spirit Awards, the John Cassevetes Award and the Someone to Watch Award - is a modern relationship comedy that follows a romantically challenged trio of twentysomethings on a farcical road trip to recover an armchair. Along the way relationships are tested in the context of set pieces like an impromptu wedding, a motel scam gone wrong, and a run-in with a belligerent upholsterer.

The Puffy Chair (2006) DVD Review:

The Puffy Chair was extremely realistic in the depictions, especially the performances by Mark Duplass and Kathryn Aselton of couple Josh and Emily who are so real that it often becomes obnoxious. Josh and Emily are having difficulties, so Josh invites her to come on a road trip with him to pick up a chair for his father. Many of the scenes, stolen from better romantic comedies or not, are not at all glossy. The couple even talks to each other in baby voices far more than is comfortable and as a viewer it may begin to feel as though you are a third wheel when they start acting silly with each other. At the same time it is somewhat endearing in small doses, but the real strength that the film has is showing the awkward and uncomfortably true aspects of a relationship, even when it forces the viewer into a state of intrusion.

Along for the ride on the road trip to give his father a replica chair on his birthday is Josh’s birthday, who manages to squeeze his way into the trip just as Emily was able to do. This causes an even more uncomfortable setting as Josh and Emily evaluate their relationship and tackle each obstacle that gets in the way of their mission. This adds another layer of unpredictable as Josh’s brother Rhett is just as much an individual and capable of bringing trouble as well.

After being slightly disturbed with the baby talk I didn’t think much of the Puffy Chair in the beginning, but before long it had grabbed my interest and suddenly I began to feel as though these characters were my friends. Perhaps it is the fact that I have many friends similar to these three that caused me to take such a strong interest in their lives, as though I were along for the ride. Whatever it is, it seems to be a common theme in road trip films recently, as Little Miss Sunshine created the same feeling for families in replacement of the relationship issues of The Puffy Chair.

The special features include a humorous interview in which the Duplass brothers interview themselves in the car as they drive around LA, and they actually answer some pretty common questions. There is also a commentary track with the brothers and three of their short films, including one in which a man has great difficulty recording his answering machine message. In regards to The Puffy Chair there are deleted scenes and outtakes.
