Coastlines (2006) Synopsis:

An ex-con returns to his Florida hometown after three years and becomes involved with the wife of his best friend, the local sheriff.

Coastlines (2006) DVD Review:

When Sonny Mann (Timothy Olyphant) returns to his hometown in Florida after serving three years in jail for drug trafficking, he finds that things have changed. His old partners Eddie and Fred Vance (Josh Lucas and William Forsythe) have expanded and grown in their power, so when he insists that he is through with a life of crime, they find it easier to kill him than pay him off. The attempt is unsuccessful and instead Sonny loses someone he loves. Instead of asking for help from his best friend, Dave Lockhart (Josh Brolin), who is also the sheriff of the town, Sonny plans his revenge against the men.

The sub-plot involving an affair between Sonny and his best friend’s wife doesn’t help much in making him a likable character, especially since these are the only people he has left when his old criminal friends want him dead and his living relatives in the area are all dead. What feels as though it may be an intense thriller turns for most of the film towards the classic adultery drama with a few twists. When the story gets back on track and deals with the criminals that Sonny used to work for before he went to jail, that is when Coastline seems to thrive the most.

Director and writer Victor Nunez brings the same steady pacing to Coastline that he has in past films. Not a great deal happens within the plot, and what does happen seems to come slowly. The dialogue is sparse and what is said hardly gives all of the information behind the words, which is why the performances are so important. Olyphant who brought such intensity to Deadwood seems somewhat wasted in such an understated role, but this is nothing compared to how little Lucas and Forsythe are used in the film. One of the most important roles in the film is played by Sarah Wynter, as Sheriff Lockhart’s wife. She carries more weight than the rest as she begins an affair with her husband’s best friend. There are even times that Wynter’s performance must overcome some questionable dialogue.

The director’s commentary track is fairly entertaining although not entirely satisfying. When Nunez explains that he had a character slap another because someone needed to be slapped in the scene it isn’t quite as satisfying an answer as one might hope from the writer and director of the film. Some might find Nunez’s speech a bit distracting as well, especially considering how little information is given. There is also a deleted scene.
