The U.S. Vs. John Lennon (2006) Synopsis:

The documentary covers the period 1966-1976 and tells the story of John Lennon's transformation from beloved musical artist to anti-war activist to iconic inspiration for peace, and recounts the story of the U.S. Government's efforts to silence him. The U.S. vs. John Lennon will also show that this was not just an isolated episode in American history, but that the issues and struggles of that era remain relevant today.

The U.S. Vs. John Lennon (2006) DVD Review:

John Lennon was an extremely influential artist and activist with the ability to sway a man out of jail with a song and far more involvement in anti-war efforts in America than Nixon was comfortable with. In the end it truly was a battle against Lennon, but the real battle is against war, which is what makes this documentary so relevant. Lennon’s spirit is still fighting against war for peace through this powerful documentary. It is remarkable, especially for those who didn’t live through the Vietnam War and only know Lennon as one of The Beatles.

A portion of the documentary gives the story of Lennon’s childhood, time with The Beatles, and his death, but a majority of the film just focuses on his political activism during the time he was living in New York with Yoko Ono. He was quick to become friends with all of the people that were under surveillance by the government, and before long he was considered a threat because of the power he held with the younger voters due to his celebrity and the messages he was able to get out in catchy tunes. It wasn’t long before there was effort made to get him and Yoko removed from the country.

There is plenty of footage to show a side of John that most didn’t see, including some silly stuff with him and Yoko harassing the press with strange interviews. What really stands out in this documentary are the different personalities who appear for interviews about him. From political figures to activists there are a remarkable amount of people willing to give the truth for this film, which show the power that he has even after death.

The DVD doesn’t contain many special features. There is a theatrical trailer and a number of deleted sequences. It is mostly just additional interviews, but there are some good stories told in them.
