National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise Of Taj (2006) Synopsis:

"Van Wilder Deux: The Rise of Taj" is the sequel to the successful 2002 release, National Lampoon's "Van Wilder." Taj (Kal Penn) from the first film, heads to England's prestigious Oxford University to further his studies while in the process, showing the uptight student body how to party.

National Lampoon's Van Wilder: The Rise Of Taj (2006) DVD Review:

Although there is the obvious disappointment of a series continued without the leading actor that made it work in the first place, but Van Wilder: The Rise of Taj works better than most, able to fall back on the recently rising success of supporting actor Kal Penn who takes the Wilder outlook with him to an England University. Seeing as it is a sequel with obvious comparisons, taking it out of the country was a smart idea. Not only does it add a slight sophistication to the text, but the scenery is far more beautiful during the cliché and expected moments of another typical college comedy.

This Van Wilder sequel doesn’t necessarily miss Van Wilder all that much, but since the release of the first college comedy there has been a shift in comedies that makes this film far less appealing. The same jokes don’t work as well the second time around, especially not years after they were mildly successful the first time. Kal Penn still manages to make the film bearably entertaining with his charm and magnetism as Taj Badalandabad, Van Wilder’s student in the ways of college. Taj soon finds that he is going to need these skills to survive in the prestigious Camford University where he is cruelly rejected from the top fraternity. Instead Taj sets out to make the broken down house of rejects the coolest fraternity in the University while also winning the heart of the top dog’s girlfriend.

The pathetic excuse for plot in these college comedies is usually due to the fact that people only seem to go to them for the humor and the exploitation of attractive women. There isn’t much of either in this film, but there is certainly more comedy despite the misleading “Unrated” version released on DVD. I can’t imagine what was left out in the theaters except perhaps a few more shots of Balzac’s enormous testicles.

As well as the small amount of extra unrated footage which was able to be added on DVD, there are also a few special features worth looking at. There are two music videos, one by Jonny Lives and the other by Marion Raven. There are also some deleted scenes which are a bit funnier than most on DVDs, but not as humorous as the gag reel. There are also two featurettes, one of which is a tour of a set with Penn.
