Freeway (1996) Synopsis:

Little Red Riding Hood for the 1990's: After her mom and step-dad are arrested, 15-year-old Vanessa Lutz decides that instead of once again being put into a foster home, she'd rather go and search for the grandmother she's never met, and live with her. "On the way to grandma's house," (actually a trailer park) Vanessa's car breaks down, and she's picked up from the side of the road by Bob Wolverton, a counselor at a school for troubled boys. Bob slowly earns Vanessa's trust, and eventually convinces her to talk about her sexual abuse at the hands of her stepfather. When Vanessa realizes that Bob is enjoying what she's saying, she realizes that he's "The I-5 Killer," from the news. She tries to get out of his truck, but the inside door handle has been

Freeway (1996) DVD Review:

Kiefer Sutherland’s recent success with television’s 24 is also helping to shed the light back on some of his past work as an actor. This Sundance hit is a brutal retelling of the classic Little Red Riding Hood story, only told in a modern and brutal world. Kiefer Sutherland’s performance as the wolf-like character is far from his performance as Jack Bauer, and it shouldn’t be compared at all, but this is one of the darker and more enjoyable career moves that Sutherland has made so far. Having Reese Witherspoon as the loud/foul-mouthed Little Red Riding Hood is even more shocking than Sutherland’s performance. Witherspoon’s performance is so far from the Legally Blonde and Walk the Line reputation she has now, but it is also one of the performances that catapulted her career forward.

Witherspoon is Vanessa, a sixteen-year-old whose mother and step-father have just been arrested. She is about to be put into the foster care system when she steals her family’s car and heads to her grandmother’s house. Unfortunately along the way Vanessa runs into a serial killer, Bob Wolverton, on the freeway. She then finds herself in a battle of wits and force against the brutal man who kills young girls. Much of the film is so gritty that it is unpleasant to watch, although cleverly fit into the classic story.

This strange and often forgotten film is a great example of an independent film, a little to shocking for most audiences, but almost immediately claiming some cult status. With even a score by Danny Elfman there is no reason why this film has been so quickly moved to the back of the shelves. Unfortunately this new release of the DVD is just a minor facelift, but hopefully it will help to get people to remember or experience Freeway. There is a new cover, which makes the film look far more action packed than it actually is, there is a only a theatrical trailer in the special features.
