The Silent Partner (1979) Synopsis:
This is an imaginative plot, yet one with which the viewer can readily identify. A bank teller (Elliot Gould) is held up at gun point in his bank. Luckily for him he receives a clue that this is going to occur and diverts most of the cash into his own safety deposit box, leaving only a nominal amount for the crook (Christopher Plummer). The ruse works well, but for the fact that the crook resents the fact that he has been outsmarted. There ensues a terrific battle of wits involving the clever but basically "moral" teller, and the cunning and totally uninhibited bank robber, which involves several other people in ways which cannot be revealed here.
The Silent Partner (1979) DVD Review:
The cover for The Silent Partner looks like an ad for Ocean’s 11, with only a few small photos of the actors at the bottom of the DVD. This is deceiving, because the Silent Partner is actually a thriller from 1978, which is ingenious and thrilling, but there are only two men in the film, making the cover with three men seem even more ridiculous. I suppose that it is a glorious thing for the great bank robbery film to be on DVD at all, but in the future it is my hope that they just use the original artwork.
Miles Cullen (Elliot Gould in his prime) is a bank teller working in a mall during Christmas. He begins to notice some strange behavior by a mall Santa Clause, who ends up being a bank robber. Planning to steal the money himself, there is hardly a fraction of what there should be at his station, so although the bank robber dressed as Santa takes all of the blame, Miles ends up with most of the money. When Miles also begins receiving his fifteen minutes of fame as well as some scrutiny for the amount stolen, he goes through intricate measures to be certain the money can’t easily be connected to him, but is hidden safely in a safety box in the bank. The only problem comes when the bank robber (Christopher Plummer) realizes that Miles had used him in order to take the bank’s money he begins a battle of wits to take revenge.
Despite the cool half smile that Gould wears most of the film, there are some rather intense moments in the film. The man Miles is up against is not as intelligent, but what he lacks in brains he is more than willing to make up for in violence and brutality. He isn’t pleased that he was outsmarted by a bank teller and will do anything to get revenge and his money. Meanwhile Miles is forced to juggle a relationship with a fellow co-worker at the bank (Susannah York) and the robber’s girlfriend (Celine Lomez), who seduces him in order to try and get the money. To top off the already complex film, John Candy also has a small role as a bank employee.
