Undiscovered (2005) Synopsis:

An aspiring New York model falls in love with a struggling musician when they suddenly cross paths on a subway train. Having achieved success as a model, she decides to move to L.A. to launch an acting career. With the support of her acerbic agent and sometimes surrogate mom, she lands a spot in a highly sought after acting class where she befriends another would-be actress. While out on the town discovering the music scene, the aspiring model again crosses paths with the struggling musician. The two girls decide to help him and set out to create some L.A. style hype to get him noticed. As his profile rises, so do the demands of his budding new career and they both discover that the price of fame may be higher than anyone expected.

Undiscovered (2005) DVD Review:

A chance meeting on the New York subway leaves Brier (James) and Luke (Strait) wondering what could have been. When the two move to Los Angeles, Luke to try and make it as a musician and Brier to try her hand at acting, a mutual friend Clea (Simpson) brings them together again after two years apart. With the attraction still there but complications in both of their lives, can love blossom or will it remain undiscovered?

Love and music have gone hand in hand for generations but at the box office this doesn’t always guarantee a hit.

Tales of a musician and a model turned actress falling in love are nothing new in movies. Beautiful people living beautiful lives are the things that dreams are made of and most trashy romance movies back in the last century but this is the new millennium with a more sophisticated audience. Can the story of a struggling musician, just waiting for that big break and a model, trying to break into acting, keep audiences enthralled when they really don’t have anyone they can connect with? For the most part the answer is yes.

There is no argument that both Pell James and Steven Strait are two beautiful people but they are not ones that you wouldn’t have any chance of meeting in real life. These are the kind of people who everyone will know or even have had a crush on in real life but secretly knew they were slightly out of their league. This means that you can connect with them and follow their journey towards fame and fortune. Pell James and Steven Strait make Brier and Luke all the more watchable, however cheesy the plot may be.

The support is also decent. Ashlee Simpson tries to step out of her sister Jessica’s shadow as fellow singer Clea, Shannyn Sossamon is suitably bitchy as Brazilian model Josie and Kip Pardue has fun as Luke’s brother Euan. Add to this, noticeable smaller roles for Carrie Fisher, Fisher Stevens and Peter Weller and you have a good cast.

‘Undiscovered’ is incredibly cheesy and overly sentimental but very watchable all the same. The music is a little too stereotypical but will have your toe tapping and both Pell James and Steven Strait are very watchable, making the film more enjoyable than it ever should have been. This makes it worth discovering.

OVERALL

The lack of bonus features will come as a real disappointment to fans of the film. They could have at least had a featurette covering the songs of the movie and some interviews. Viewers now expect a little more for their money.
