Born To Fight Synopsis:

Daew is a cop who has nailed the evil gunrunner General Yang, but his partner is killed in the case and Daew becomes depressed. However, his sister asks him to join her and some of her athlete friends to a small village to give food and toys to the villagers. What starts out as a trip to help people turns into a nightmare when Yang's men arrive at the village and take over, demanding the release of Yang or a nuclear missile will hit Bangkok. When villagers are killed left and right, Daew and the athletes must start a revolution against the tyranny before it's too late.

Born To Fight DVD Review:

There has been a sudden boom of Thai films gaining attention internationally, following the initial success of Thai Warrior, Tony Jaa. Violence is done differently in Thai action films, and often even crosses over into Thai musical westerns, as was the case with Tears of the Black Tiger. Each of these films have been impressively unique, but the sad thing about the latest Thai action film, Born to Fight, is the complete lack of originality. Thai villager pride is still popular with a near-Tony Jaa replacement who is unable to fill the shoes well enough in the role of the fighting savior.

Born to Fight certainly attempts enough insane stunts to make the action slightly impressive, but there is a second rate quality to the story, the action, and the acting. This is another Bam-Ram-Ewe production without any wires or computer generated graphics fro the stunts scenes, and there is so much pride in this fact that many sequences seem specifically set up just for the stunts, making the film feel much more like a stunt show at an amusement park than a narrative film. The basic storyline for the film deals with a typical situation. A rogue police officer is stuck in a remote village which has been overtaken by terrorists who are threatening to send a missile into the city if their political/criminal leader is released. The undercover officer must save the day, taking the terrorists down one at a time. What makes the film slightly different is the signature Thai village pride which causes the village of poor people to fight back.

Some of the stunts are the main focus of the film, which makes the end credits even better. It is often painful watching the stunts gone wrong, because they seem to be doing the stunts with minimal safety in concern. At times the bloopers during the credits look more like an episode of a Thai Jackass television show rather than an action film. The two-disc ultimate edition DVD also contains a commentary track on disc one, featuring Hong Kong cinema expert Bey Logan, who is at this point familiar with the commentary track.

The second disc of the DVD contains a 60-minute documentary on the making of Born to Fight, which has its interesting moments and some dull ones as well. There is also a special features with more footage on set of the film as well as two different trailers for the film.
