Ghost Rider (2007) Synopsis:
In order to save his dying father, young stunt cyclist Johnny Blaze sells his soul to Mephistopheles and sadly parts from the pure-hearted Roxanne Simpson, the love of his life. Years later, Johnny's path crosses again with Roxanne, now a gogetting reporter, and also with Mephistopheles, who offers to release Johnny's soul if Johnny becomes the fabled, fiery Ghost Rider, a supernatural agent of vengeance and justice. Mephistopheles charges Johnny with defeating the despicable Blackheart, Mephistopheles's nemesis and son, who plans to displace his father and create a new hell even more terrible than the old one.
Ghost Rider (2007) DVD Review:
There have been enough comic book films made recently to realize that studios are beginning to get desperate with their choices. Heroes who have already seen a franchise are being re-invented and even Spider-Man 3 was a blemish on the trilogy showing how quickly ideas seem to run out. When this happens ideas begin to get dug up in far less likely heroes such as Ghost Rider. Although the flashy style and large use of visual effects seems to make this comic book hero a wise choice, the story is lacking so much depth and substance that it doesn’t even matter that there is no humanity remaining when Nicholas Cage turns into a flaming skeleton in a leather jacket. Even when he is not the Ghost Rider Cage seems to be sleepwalking his way through the film with the casual twang of a dull Johnny Blaze.
Part of the problem with this particular superhero is that he is not altogether a hero or extraordinarily super aside from his choice to sell his soul to the devil, who is played by Peter Fonda in an unlikely role. What gifts the Ghost Rider does have seem to come more from Johnny Blaze, who is a death-defying motorcycle daredevil, and these gifts are merely enhanced by power and fire once he turns into the Ghost Rider. In fact, the Ghost Rider may look cool and have the ability to ride to his location in style with a blazing path of destruction left as he passes, but other than that he is just a glorified grim reaper. After selling his soul to the devil as a way to save his father from cancer as a teenager, Johnny Blaze is this reaper for the devil, only he doesn’t actually do this job until the Devil’s son Blackheart (Wes Bentley) emerges from hell in rebellion of his father. At this point the devil calls upon the Ghost Rider and Blaze finds that whenever he is near evil people he turns into a flaming skeleton and makes the guilty feel the pain they have caused others. This ability is slightly interesting the first time, but after realizing this was the extent of his powers it gets old fast and most of the movie is spent battling demons and spirits (in the shape of earth, wind and water) rather than making the streets safer.
To complicate issues more Blaze also reunites with a long lost flame (Eva Mendes) and his newly formed night habits prevent him from keeping any dates with her. This all spirals into a predictable bottle-neck ending which has Blaze facing off against Blackheart and winning the girl, which should be of no surprise to anyone watching the ridiculous film, but I suppose nobody should be watching it for anything other than spectacle anyways. The DVD contains two making-of documentaries and filmmaker commentaries. Both of these features are mildly interesting, mostly for the same reasons the film is; the special effects are fairly good which creates eye candy.
