Yo-Yo Girl Cop (2006) Synopsis:

Yo-Yo Girl Cop (2006) DVD Review:

High school is the source of more drama, action and horror in Asian cinema than nearly anything else. Seemingly just as popular as ghosts, and often in Korean horror films combined with them, is high school bullying in Asian cinema. Many horror films begin with a bullied child that becomes a ghost back for revenge, but in Yo-Yo Girl Cop the bullying is used to create a villain rather than a creature. When bullying has become so awful that kids aren’t even helped by the adults at the school, a website is formed to fight back. Unfortunately it turns into a terrorist site more than anything else, a sort of manual for destruction which even includes instructions on building bombs. When the website suddenly has a timer counting down the seconds to some unforeseen event police are desperate to find the answers before it is too late.

K is brought in to go undercover in the high school where the trouble is thought to be coming from, and she only has a certain amount of time before the countdown ends. The countdown is slightly absurd, although it does keep the film moving along at a steady pace. Undercover as Asamiya she enters the school and immediately finds a friend stands up to bullies and has a dozen other eventful things happen just in the first day. She is deeply entangled in the web of intricate planning at the school only after a couple of days, which is unrealistic at best, but this is a movie about an undercover thug armed with a yo-yo and so I already had a great deal of belief suspended before long into the movie.

As exciting as the action in the film is, there are far too many points where the film lags terribly. Although the friendship Asamiya makes with a bullied high school student is not wasted it does tend to take up a great deal of time considering the countdown. Also, there is absolutely nothing cinematically interesting about watching two people text message, which is one of the more painful scenes dealing with their friendship. Even the yo-yo action, which sounds ridiculous but becomes far more exciting when razorblades get involved, doesn’t really come into play until the final showdown. The fighting is great, but I wouldn’t necessarily say that the film is non-stop action.

The DVD art is a perfect example of how off-balanced the action is with four of the seven photos on the back of the DVD taken from the final battle. There is not much fighting in the film before the end, but that doesn’t mean al of this time is wasted. In general it is a decent action film with only specific moments rising above average. The DVD also includes a making-of featurette and the original Japanese trailer for the film.
