Sweet Movie Synopsis:

Pushing his themes of sexual liberation to their boiling point, Yugoslavian art-house provocateur Dusan Makavejev followed his international sensation WR: Mysteries of the Organism with this full-throated shriek in the face of bourgeois complacency and movie watching. Sweet Movie tackles the limits of personal and political freedom with kaleidoscopic feverishness, shuttling viewers from a gynecological beauty pageant to a grotesque food orgy with scatological, taboo-shattering glee. With its lewd abandon and sketch-comedy perversity, Sweet Movie became both a cult staple and an exemplar of the envelope pushing of 1970s cinema.

Sweet Movie DVD Review:

Classified as “art-house shockers”, Dušan Makevejev’s films are often filled with as many disgusting as thought-provoking images, and Sweet Movie is no exception. His most shocking as well as controversial Sweet Movie is most notably remembered because of the large amount of scenes dealing with food that are apt to leave the audience with no appetite. There are no boundaries which can’t be crossed in this film, from bowel movement to murder, it all seems connected to food somehow.

Using the same style as other Dušan Makevejev films, Sweet Movie combines numerous stories and random footage into a somewhat jarring structure with an obvious theme running through all of the film. Sweet Movie is the most controversial of all Makevejek films because of how far he takes these stories in order to make his themes as poignant as possible. On top of the absurd sexual scenes there are also some jarring stereotypes of certain cultures, most damaging being the rich cowboy American who buys himself a virgin bride in order to urinate on her with his golden penis.

On his wedding night with his new bride the woman chosen is treated as a possession, both as he introduces her to his workers and family and in the way he polishes her body as if it were a car before fulfilling his strange sexual habits. This situation is strange and when she complains she is taken away in luggage by the weightlifting servant. He takes her to Europe where she gives her virginity away quickly to a famous Spanish musician in the Eiffel Tower. This experience ends so horrifyingly for the poor girl that she is put into a catatonic shock, unable even to feed herself. Soon after this incident, a group that embodies the opposite of the American clean freak take her under their wing and into their strange habits. Meals with this group begins with sloppy manners and ends in group vomit sessions and other foul behavior.

The other storyline which takes focus follows a mysterious stranger who comes into town on a boat filled with sugar. This woman seduces boys and men alike into her boat with countless treats, and continuing the absurd food fetish, sexual acts are often combined with the consumption of the candy. While this storyline does not jump around quite as much, there are only a few big surprises needed to make it just as shocking and disturbing.

Along with a new digital high-definition transfer and improved subtitles, the DVD also includes footage of actress Anna Prucnal singing a song from the film and a video interview with Makevejev.
