It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia - Seasons 1 & 2 DVD Review:

There is something exhilarating about watching characters with no morals, doing all of the things most of us wouldn’t dare. It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is so over-the-top that it makes the characters on Seinfeld look like good people. The show takes place in a seedy Irish pub in Philadelphia where three childhood friends, Mac, Charlie and Dennis, do whatever they can to make a quick buck or laid easily. Along with Dennis’s sister, who is Paddy’s bartender, they each show that there is never a limit on how politically incorrect and ignorant your characters can be, which is ridiculously entertaining to watch. Even as the crew sells alcohol to underage kids and is responsible for accidental arson the show remains hysterical. Purposefully offensive is much easier to enjoy and far more difficult to sincerely offend, although anyone sensitive is better of leaving this wicked gem alone.

The premise for the show is extremely clever, and it is possible to enjoy the show without ever realizing the pattern. Every episode of the show deals with some hot-button issue, either socially or politically. Of course none of the degenerate gang choose the moral decision, and by taking the shadier route we are given a rather conservative message by it all. Then again it is done in such humor that there is no significant redeeming message anywhere to be found in the show. Taking the cold selfishness of Seinfeld into a show about important issues rather than nothing, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is wickedly entertaining. The anti-My Name is Earl style of the show has these characters doing ruthless things to each other and anyone they need to in order to fill selfish gains.

The casting on the show is also dead on, especially in the final episode of season two when years of role recognition from Seventh Heaven helps to make a perfect cameo. Danny DeVito joins the cast in season two as Dennis and Dee’s father who has decided to start the bachelor lifestyle again. He turns out to be just as bad as the rest of them, coming up with plenty of his own plans to make a crooked fortune.

The set contains both season one and season two on three DVDs. This is seventeen episodes with the third disc also containing a majority of the special features. Disc one does have some deleted scenes from the original pilot, which is just some different actors and locations but the same premise. Although the special features on the last disc contain a making-of featurette which is great and a number of other small featurettes and some audio commentaries by the hilarious cast and crew, the best feature is the outtakes. Sometimes the outtakes are the best part and considering that most of the outtakes are of the actors unable to stop laughing. There is even split screen on many of the takes so that you can see both actors reactions.
