Desperate Housewives - The Complete Third Season DVD Review:
The box I watch and review all DVDs on is called a television, but the only television ever seen on this particular box is on DVD as well. I no longer watch television, and with the assurance that the hottest television shows will be released on DVD and available for mass consumption or slow, drawn out, pleasure viewing, I don’t need to. I will admit that the wait in between each DVD release can be torturous, but I am a patient person, and Desperate Housewives is one of those ideal shows to watch this way. Although some of the plotlines carry over each season, there are always new mysteries added at the beginning of each season, making it easy to delve right in. Old conflict is also quickly shifted from season to season, allowing for fresh starts for all characters. It doesn’t hurt that there is a six month gap between season two and three, just to help that new start which was also a convenient way to cover up the slight changes the actors had made to their appearances during the break.
As well as giving the women plenty of their own storylines, there are more mysteries to solve this season as well, though many of them are somewhat predictable and simple. There are new neighbors, new storylines and plenty of new relationships to give the old ones tension. The men of Wisteria Lane have their own problems, even though the women tend to take focus. Mike is recovering from a hit-and-run at the end of season two and his memory loss makes it possible for the difficulties between him and Susan while a past mistake makes Tom’s life difficult temporarily as well. Admitting to having another child, suddenly he finds himself also juggling the two competitive mothers in his life until a completely bizarre incident in a grocery store cleans the whole mess up neatly.
In perfect fashion, just as one villain is removed, another quickly falls into place. There is always someone out to get one of the women, whether it is at work, in their love life or even at church. There is no rest for the women of Wisteria Lane, partly because they are busybodies in the most fun sense of the word, but also because they live in a soap opera filled, drama soaked existence. The women are wickedly manipulative and often as bad as the villains. This is what holds the show together, along with witty writing, and that is really all that is needed for it to be unexplainably addicting. Unfortunately there is a slight slip in the material in the third season, with some unbelievable coincidences and repetitious characters swarming this one suburban street. One would think murder and deceit is far more likely in suburbs, an idea Alfred Hitchcock tried to prove in Shadow of a Doubt, but this suburb is starting to get out of hand.
New to the block is a rebellious teenager for Julie, Susan’s responsible daughter, to fall for. He also happens to be Edie’s nephew, which upsets Susan even more. Luckily she is preoccupied with her own problems, either trying to get Mike back or struggling with the relationship she began with another man in the coma ward, whose wife is still in-between life and death. Meanwhile the man who caused Mike’s memory loss worms his way into the life of Bree, who can’t seem to get a break when it comes to men. Matters are made even worse when his mother comes into their life along with a new mystery, which may be connected with a very old one.
Season three has twenty-three episodes on six discs set in a package not unlike season two, including the see through plastic case. The deleted scenes are reserved for the last disc, which includes favorite scenes , deleted scenes and a featurette about the season finale.
