Felix The Cat: The Complete 1958-1959 Series DVD Review:

This set includes all of the thirty-one episodes from the full-color television series from 1958-1959. Each of the episodes of Felix the Cat has been digitally re-mastered and restored to look as sharp and as clear as possible. The colors are magnificent and the short episodes can be enjoyed in all the simple pleasure they bring. Although the episodes are all extremely short, the amount allows for over 232 minutes of footage including special features. This is a set for any Felix fan, but also a great idea for sharing your favorites with a younger generation.

The basic premise of most every episode of Felix involves someone trying to harm Felix the Cat. Felix has a special bag of tricks that helps him in any situation, but it is also the cause of most his trouble. Felix is often chased by The Professor, an evil scientist who is fascinated by Felix’s magic bag and will do anything to steal it from the cat. Felix’s bag helps him escape, able to turn into any number of vehicles, animals, and various mechanical instruments. The bag saves Felix in any situation and he is always seen walking along with his bag until attacked by The Professor or some other villain. The location often becomes the changing element in an otherwise predictable cartoon with a pattern not different than the coyote and roadrunner’s relationship. Felix often finds himself in space, whether the moon or Venus. He also encounters ghosts, whales, and the Abominable Snowman. Felix brings along his friend Poindexter, the Professor’s nephew in some episodes and obtains gold near the end of the series, which is just one more thing for the professor to want from him.

The DVD also contains a few special features including an interview: “Through the ages With John Canemaker. There is also an archival promo reel and an additional cartoon from the 1920s, a Feline Follies Film Short.
