Ghost Whisperer - The Second Season DVD Review:
Ghost Whisperer is a fairly easy show to explain to anyone who has seen The Sixth Sense, a film with a twist ending widespread enough to no longer be in danger of spoiling the movie for anyone. Although most of the movie we see the frightening spirits as a threat, because there is an element of mystery to them, by the end it becomes clear that they are simply looking for help from the one person who can commune with them. Once the realization that the ghost is not a threat occurs the film turns rather sentimental, and this seems to be where Ghost Whisperer takes its cue. It could be described as a reverse Touched by an Angel, only with Jennifer Love Hewitt showing as much cleavage as possible as often as possible.
Instead of angels helping humans, Hewitt stars as Melinda Gordon, a living person helping spirits go toward the light. Each of these shows has a strong spiritual grounding, but Ghost Whisperer doesn’t seem able to trust this will be enough, adding in a frightening ghost element not unlike The Sixth Sense along with more wardrobe changes for Hewitt than any one woman could believably own. The fact that she runs an antique shop is even more absurd as she always looks ready for a catwalk while she saves souls. Ghosts even linger to watch her in the shower, as does the camera, but who could blame either of them as long as that is what the show is selling alongside the warm and fuzzy conclusion as Melinda sends the spirits towards the light.
Season two brings the death of Melinda’s partner directly into her abilities main use. Having to help her best friend let go of her guilt and go towards the light is made more difficult by a dark spirit countering Melinda’s gift to help people choose the light. After that there are more of the usual, with the inclusion of a young protégé for Melinda in the form of a young boy who can also hear the dead, even though he doesn’t realize it. His mother becomes a close friend and new employee Season two also has a few clever guest appearances including Lacey Chabert, a former member of The Party of Five cast with Hewitt. Their interaction upon first seeing each other is so delayed in order to insure everyone appreciates the connection before moving on with the show.
Season two has twenty-two episodes on six discs, with the discs containing special features holding fewer episodes. These special features include interviews with the cast in several featurettes and a series of webisodes. “A Conversation with the Living” is a series of interviews with cast members about the second season of the show, sort of a retrospective of the sophomore year. There is also a unique feature which allows for select episodes to be interrupted temporarily for back stock from the show creators. “Melinda’s Closet is a featurette entirely dedicated to the costume designer Joseph Porro, who makes the ghost whisperer have as much sex appeal as possible with his extreme fashion designs showcasing his and her talents more than fitting in with the small town atmosphere of the show’s location. The special effects on the show are fitting, however, and there is a featurette about key make-up artist Kandace Westmore and the process of creating ghosts.
