The Best Of The Colbert Report DVD Review:

If you liked watching The Colbert Report with Steven Colbert when it aired on Comedy Central, then you will love to reminisce the first two seasons with The Best of the Colbert Report. The DVD features Segments from The Word, including the very first word “Truthiness,” memorable interviews with “Papa Bear” Bill O’Reilly and the “Cooking with Feminists” interview with Jane Fonda and Gloria Steinam. Also, several segments that spanned multiple episodes are shown back to back in their entirety, such as Better Know a District and the Green Screen Challenge, which leads to the battle of The Decemberists vs. Steven Colbert Rock & Awe: Countdown to Guitarmageddon.

The aforementioned highlights of The Colbert Report are classic episodes that will surely keep you laughing through your second or third viewing. Bill O’Reilly seething in his chair as Colbert mocks him is brilliant, and who would even think up making a pair of feminists cook an American Apple Pie while being interviewed about their new talk radio station? The writers, staff and crew are well prepared for any reaction from the interviewee, and Colbert quickly inserts clever ad-libs when the interview begins to go astray. And yet, comedian Colbert is stumped when Fonda breaks through his façade during the “Cooking with Feminists” segment, and again when she joins him for a discussion of her most recent film Georgia Rule (2007).

While Fonda sits on Colbert’s lap, she says that in the movie she plays Georgia, who has rules; Colbert retorts that he and his wife have rules, and Fonda is breaking many of them. Fonda responds by kissing Colbert on the lips; this is not the first time, though, simply a recurrence of the Cooking session, when she smacked his lips with hers multiple times. Aside from the basic interview, none of the lip locking was planned. This is just the kind of humor you can expect from the rest of the DVD as well.

If you want to buy The Best of the Colbert Report for its extras, then you should know that the DVD contains some parts of the actual show, but nothing along the lines of behind the scenes footage or anything that hasn’t already been shown within a preexisting episode. However, this disc has hours of satirical Colbert action. All of the current event news updates have been omitted, so the disc simply shows the exploits and interactions Colbert has with anyone he comes across. Especially entertaining to those who realize Steven Colbert is a left-wing Democrat, particularly pertinent to his recent announcement that he is running for presidency (but only in South Carolina), and in perfect timing with the release of his book “I am America and So can you!”, The Best of the Colbert Report is a perfect reminder to stimulate the American economy with the purchase of this DVD.
