The Princess Bride (1987) Synopsis:

Robin Wright and Cary Elwes star in this fairytale adventure about a beautiful princess and the gallant hero who rescues her from an evil villain. Directed by Rob Reiner, it's an enchanting classic the whole family will love!

The Princess Bride (1987) DVD Review:

Princess Bride 20th Anniversary “As you Wish” Edition DVD contains the classic movie of meshed-together fairy tales filled with sword fighting action, uncommon friendship and true love. Through the Eel Infested Waters, climbing the Cliffs of Insanity, surviving the Fire Swamp and the Pit of Despair, the true love that Westley (Cary Elwes) and Buttercup (Robin Wright) share cannot be killed.

The 20th Anniversary Edition is a single DVD that contains no deleted scenes, alternate endings or restoration; it is simply the same Princess Bride fans have come to know and love, and continue to discover again and again. There are many special features that are absolutely charming, somewhat of a cast and crew reunion in the form of interviews. These include “Princess Bride: The Untold Tales Featurette,” “Fairy Tales and Folklore Featurette,” and “The Art of Fencing Featurette.”

“The Untold Tales” shows wonderful interviews with the hilarious cast 20 years later, including Robin Wright, Christopher Guest, and Mandy Patinkin, all reminiscing memorable quotes, their encounters with Andre the Giant, and the experience of taking part in such an unforgettable feature. “The Art of Fencing” is basically an interview and demonstration of the footwork, art of the sword, and the original British choreographer for Princess Bride, Robert Anderson. It is interesting to realize that the actors not only had to know different methods and styles of fencing from different countries, but they had to switch styles fairly often according to the script all the while acting their character’s part.

Along with the extra featurettes is the printed and bound “Twice Told Tale,” a reversible paper storybook with two versions of the Princess Bride Story, depending on the cover with which you begin and end. The book basically quotes the narrator from the film, and nothing new is introduced to the story, except a neat little collectible.

Another fun thing about the special edition DVD is the True Love and high Adventure: The official Princess Bride DVD Game. It’s a silly little 2D animated DVD game where you use your remote to rhyme and punch out eels with Fizzini when the Princess falls overboard. The game is continued online at www.princessbridegame.com, where you can finish off the plot of the film until the end. Overall, it’s really quite cheap and immature, but it shouldn’t matter to the most hard-core fans. Even if you don’t laugh with the game, and instead laugh at it, a non-gamer should find this entertaining.

As a viewer, not buying the special edition DVD won’t kill you, but eventually the Princess Bride will have to be added to your collection. The extra features in the DVD are fun, but the featurettes are what really make this DVD worth the purchase.
