Barenaked Ladies: Talk To The Hand (2007) Synopsis:
Stand up and talk to the hand! Canada's favorite sons, Barenaked Ladies, cross the border for their latest concert CD and first-ever live DVD. Includes a blend of classics including "One Week," "Pinch Me" and "If I Had $1000000" and hits from their recent releases Barenaked Ladies Are Me and Barenaked Ladies are Men.
Barenaked Ladies: Talk To The Hand (2007) DVD Review:
The Barenaked Ladies live album, Talk to the Hand, contains a live audio CD and a live concert DVD including the footage from the show. The DVD features more than 60 minutes of concert footage about 15 minutes of extras and behind the scenes footage, including a sound check of “Angry People” and interviews with the band before the show. The two-disc set is the first live DVD the band has produced, and to BNL fans, the interviews offer a more intimate setting with the band.
I was not very impressed by the extras; seeing the band rehearse and hearing their interviews were ever so depressing because of band members’ rapid aging and worn down appearance. Somewhere between the 90’s and today the band’s sound should have evolved and had a facelift to avoid aging, but instead, this DVD shows off BNL’s sagging, wrinkling, and just plain unappealing, skin. When the Barenaked Ladies dropped their first album they were fresh and new, and today, although the musical style that the band plays has stayed the same, it lacks its original luster.
For their first concert DVD ever, fans should be pleased to get both a CD and DVD of the Michigan performance, and those who attended the actual concert can take home the set as a memento of the show. It is also important to document BNL before the band members completely turn to dust and their guitar strings rust, which shouldn’t be much longer now.
Overall, the set offers little new insight into the lives and creation of the band. The interviews are bland, mostly because the members themselves are not particularly interesting characters to focus upon when they aren’t carrying instruments. Even with instruments and music, it would be a much better spent 90 minutes if the tired-out band was filmed taking a nap. It could have made for a much more entertaining DVD.
