Waitress (2007) DVD Review:
WAITRESS is the story of a young woman unhappily trapped by her life. Married to a controlling man, Jenna has been squirreling away money to make her escape, until she discovers that she is pregnant.
Jenna, played by Keri Russell (Felicity, 8 Days A Week), works at “Joe’s Pie Diner” as both pie baker and waitress for the cranky Cal and the curmudgeonly owner Old Joe, played by Andy Griffith. Jenna’s only loves in life are her two best friends and co-workers, Dawn (Adrienne Shelly) and Becky (Cheryl Hines), and creating/baking pies. Jenna’s turmoil often translates itself into her pie creations. She plans on using her impressive pie skills to win a pie baking contest, and using the prize money to help her escape from her husband. Jenna’s plans seem ruined, however, when she discovers that she is pregnant. Even in her darkest moments, Jenna creates a new pie, the “I Don’t Want Earl’s Baby” pie, which she eventually calls “Bad Baby” pie. It appears as if everything is lost until Jenna finds that she is interested in her new doctor, Dr. Jim Pomatter, played by Nathan Fillion (Firefly, Slither), and they begin a romantic relationship. As Jenna’s pregnancy progresses she finds her self-confidence and starts to carve out her own little slice of happiness.
Adrienne Shelly, writer/director of WAITRESS and also the actress who plays Dawn, weaves an entertaining, light-hearted story played brilliantly by its star-heavy cast. Each character, except perhaps Earl, forces their way into the viewer’s heart. Even the sub plots of the film are fun and memorable. Dawn, the “too pale and plain” friend ends up finding love after her “5 minute” date, Becky who is married to a geriatric invalid finds passion in the arms of the grouchy short order cook Cal, and Old Joe the particular old coot that owns the pie shop ends up being the voice of experience that helps to inspire Jenna find her own voice. WAITRESS will leave you entertained and will stick with you long after viewing it.
Perhaps the only disappointing thing about WAITRESS is the fact that Adrienne Shelly will not be able to once again helm another film. Her voice can be heard in her witty banter on screen, and her sophisticated film language seen in this simple yet elegant film. WAITRESS met great success both at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival and at the box office. A critical darling, WAITRESS brought in almost ten times its 2 million dollar budget, which according to the Hollywood model makes it an enormous success.
The film is presented in 5.1 Surround sound. The DVD special features include an audio commentary track with producer Michael Roiff and Keri Russell. Several featurettes that reveal insight into the filmmaking process, titled “This Is How We Made Waitress Pie,” “Hi, I’m Keri and I’ll Be Your Waitress,” and “The Pies Have It.”
The DVD also includes “Written and Directed Adrienne Shelly, A Memorial.” Adrienne Shelly, writer/director and actor was tragically killed in November of 2006. The DVD also includes the FOX MOVIE CHANNEL presents IN CHARACTER WITH: Keri Russell, Cheryl Hines, and Nathan Fillion, which is a sort of look into the film with the actors.
