Danny Roane: First Time Director (2006) Synopsis:

After being blackballed from Hollywood because of his drunken antics, Danny Roane (Dick) a washed up TV actor sobers up to direct his first feature film. As the pressure builds, Roane turns to the bottle again and attempts to finish his movie about drug and alcohol abuse. But in his drunken madness, he decides to make the film a musical.

Danny Roane: First Time Director (2006) DVD Review:

In this flaccid vanity project, Andy Dick writes, directs, and stars in a mockumentary following the exploits of a D list director named Danny Roane. Perhaps in a sly post-modern move, Dick’s directing is inept both in reality and through his fictional persona. Whether Dick is a masochistic genius or not Danny Roane is a chore to watch. For a film the brands itself as politically incorrect and “balls out” there’s nothing particularly daring or shocking about Danny Roane. According to Dick, nothing says in your face like calling Kermit the Frog a crack whore. Aside from some amusing opening scenes with an overzealous executive producer and a slightly insane commercial actress portrayed by the fantastic Mo Collins, the film is devoid of ingenuity and humor. Dick dresses in drag, subjects himself to abuse, and flails around the film in order to inspire laughs but instead produces eye rolls.

Danny is assisted by his equally dysfunctional production team which includes an obese egotistical producer, a brown nosing assistant director, and other contrived personas. Cameos from sort of celebrities such as Frankie Muniz, Ben Stiller, and James Van Der Beek prove to be the film’s only saving grace as they provide some inspired moments and laughs. Much like the titular character, the film lacks coherency often stringing together scenes that seem like canceled sketches for a vapid variety show. These include Danny ordering the execution of an emu and making fun of the mentally disabled.

Danny’s alcoholism is the subject of much of the film’s attempted humor and while perhaps meant to be satirical, is instead reduced to tired slapstick. There’s an innumerable amount of unfunny scenes that solely consist of Danny stumbling into walls or passed out on the floor. Musical interludes frequent the film and feel misplaced in the sense of creating verisimilitude in form of the genre. It’s a shame that music from such great artists such as The Velvet Teen must accompany the images of a bumbling lackluster comedian. The film runs at a short 83 minutes, but by the time Anthony Rapp from Rent projectile vomits all over the set the film feels 40 minutes too long.

The list of special features is almost as dull as the feature film. Included is a compilation of mildly entertaining outtakes that prove at least Andy Dick was entertained by the film. There are also extended scenes which add mind numbing length to the already heinous originals. If there is a purpose for the existence of Danny Roane, it’s so the star of Dawson’s Creek and the phrase “bright red butt blood” can co-exist in the same universe.
