Christmas Time In South Park DVD Review:
When it comes to Christmas, you think of sleigh bells, lights, trees, Jesus, Santa, hideous sweaters, and snow. Christmas Time in South Park has all of this—and a whole lot more. Stan, Kyle, Cartman, Kenny, and the rest of South Park enjoy the holiday season with a little bit of extra flare.
This DVD includes seven Christmas South Park episodes and they’re sure to give you that not so warm and fuzzy feeling in your stomach. The witty sarcasm and satirical nature of the show offers hilarious ideas about Christmas, Chanukah, giving, America’s obsession with politically correct holidays, etc. These aren’t the most classic of episodes from the show’s history but they are entertaining. Granted, there are a number of memorable moments but only a couple of the episodes can constitute as classic. Otherwise, the special Christmas episodes are simply on par. They’re better than what typical television has to offer but in the vault of South Park episodes, they don’t particularly stick out.
Classic episodes that fans and new viewers alike will cherish are: “Mr. Hankey the Christmas Poo” (the original South Park Christmas special) and “Woodland Critter Christmas.” The former shows how a piece of fecal matter holds the true meaning of Christmas in a world that is entirely too worried about what everyone one else is celebrating. The latter follows Stan as he confronts a group of furry forest creatures, who are trying to birth the antichrist and happen to worship the devil. They both are hilarious, crude, ridiculous, and surprisingly complex and smart. By making fun of the social problems that surround us all, South Park delivers humor and a relieving break from standard Christmas television episodes.
The other episodes offer some good times but they don’t quite deserve the certificate of timeless excellence. However, such moments as Cartman’s reaction to Kyle hitting him after instigating a duel in “It’s Christmas in Canada” and Santa Claus proclaiming Christmas a day for remembering Jesus after Jesus takes a bullet for him in “Red Sleigh Down” will induce raw laughter. Of course, there are some stupid moments to get through but that’s part of the charm. “Merry Christmas Charlie Manson!” is a funny episode that you’ll remember but there are so many other episodes worthy of being on an exclusive DVD. Yes, they all revolve around Christmas and they’re beautifully absurd but it doesn’t do South Park the justice it deserves.
“Mr. Hankey’s Christmas Classics” will stir up some laughs with its distasteful allusions to classic holiday television specials. And the classic “Christmas Time in Hell” segment will make your sides hurt. The laughs come. There’s no doubt about that. They just don’t seem to be as consistent as you expect.
A Special Features section may have been able to add that little something that this DVD is missing. Unfortunately, there’s absolutely nothing, which is disappointing. Hearing about what went into these episodes from Matt and Trey would make all the difference in the world. Some of the ideas are so creative and funny that you can’t help but wonder where the inspiration came from. In order to get that information, you have to buy the season box sets.
South Park is a great show. Christmas Time in South Park is a good collection. It’s a funny couple of hours to whip out during the holiday season in order to get a few laughs and relive a couple of classic moments but other than that, it doesn’t quite deliver the tenacity that is prevalent in other episodes. No matter, it’s worth getting to know Mr. Hankey, the Woodland Critters, Charlie Manson, some Canadians, Santa Claus, Jesus, and Satan. You’ll definitely get more out of this holiday DVD than you will out of any other Christmas collection.
