This boxed set, comprising over 40 hours of material on 12 DVDs, is perfect for young and casual fans interested in learning about some of the greatest players who have made the New York Yankees the must successful franchise in sports history. Originally produced for the YES Network and hosted by longtime radio voice of the Yankees John Sterling, the set contains 28 individual player profiles and two documentaries highlighting other Yankee right- and left-handed pitchers. In addition, Reggie Jackson hosts a segment on Yankees elected to baseball’s Hall of Fame. Each Yankeeography is approximately 45 minutes-long. The series has thus far won 11 Emmy Awards.
Long-time fans will enjoy reliving classic highlights and anecdotes from the careers of such Yankee legends as Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, and Mickey Mantle, and contemporary greats including Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, and Roger Clemens. Fan favorites, including Phil Rizzuto, Roger Maris, Elston Howard, Thurman Munson, Bobby Murcer, Sparky Lyle, Willie Randolph, Don Mattingly, and Bernie Williams are also profiled. In addition to copious amounts of game footage, the episodes feature interviews with the players profiled and their teammates. Comments by opposing players, sportswriters and others provide additional insight into the accomplishments of these exceptional athletes.
While none of the episodes could be considered definitive summations for any of the players profiled, the great lure for die-hard baseball fans is the bonus disc, which includes the Hall of Fame induction speeches by Babe Ruth, Yogi Berra, Whitey Ford and others; newsreel outtakes from Lou Gehrig’s immortal farewell speech at Yankee Stadium on July 4, 1939; Hall of Fame Yankee announcer Mel Allen’s somewhat informal interview with Joe DiMaggio and Ted Williams discussing their historic 1941 season; kinescope and videotape game footage of Roger Maris, Elston Howard, Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera and others; highlights from Mickey Mantle Day and complete coverage of Billy Martin Day and Phil Rizzuto Day. The bonus disc also includes both ribald and heartfelt anecdotes concerning Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Billy Martin, Elston Howard and many more.
This DVD collection is an obvious must for any Yankee fan and, because it offers balanced portraits of the triumphs and tragedies concerning the individual players and the teams they played on, can be enjoyed by all lovers of the Great American Pastime.
