In The Land Of Women (2007) Synopsis:

Adam Brody plays Carter Webb who has just been dumped by his true love Sophia (Elena Anaya). Heartbroken and depressed, Carter escapes Los Angeles to suburban Michigan to care for his ailing grandmother (Olympia Dukakis). Soon after his arrival, Carter stumbles into the lives of the family living directly across the street: Sarah Hardwicke (Meg Ryan), the mother of two daughters: Paige (Makenzie Vega), and older sister Lucy (Kristen Stewart). Through his relationships with these women, as well as with his grandmother, Carter discovers that what felt like an end was only just the beginning of something else...

In The Land Of Women (2007) DVD Review:

If there was one great reason for the immediate success of television night-time soap, The O.C., it would have to be the surprise talent of fast-talking Adam Brody. Since then Brody has essentially started the rise of a geek-sheek emo trend in teens, and In the Land of Women Marks his first leading role in a feature film. Hopefully this is the first of many now that The O.C. no longer has its hold on the talented young star. After a nasty break-up with a semi-celebrity Carter Webb (Adam Brody) is looking for an escape, so when he hears that his grandmother has become convinced that she is dying he uses it as an excuse to leave Los Angeles for a Michigan suburb.

Although subtle as it may seem to anyone who doesn’t live in Los Angeles, Adam Brody gives a pitch-perfect representation of Los Angeles with his performance. There is something about his sincere and casual sarcasm and the slumping of his shoulders that captures the emo-like trends of young L.A. hipsters, but without the pretentiousness or showiness that usually comes in the amplified visions of film. Brody is natural enough in his delivery and the way that he carries himself, there doesn’t need to be any more showy representation. In the simple response he has when his mother asks him when he was dumped, “Hour and-a-half ago. Been in traffic,” is enough for us to understand the need for escape. Especially since his mother in L.A. seems to be taking it harder than him.

This begins the usual fish-out-of-water story as this subtly sarcastic and heartbroken writer explores a completely new environment. At the same time his neighbor (Meg Ryan) is struggling to relate to her teenage daughter, Lucy (Kristen Stewart), and face the fact that she may have breast cancer. Suddenly there is a marvelous combining of the usual break-up film and a suburban melodrama, making In the Land of Women a surprising and sincerely touching film. Carter gets to know each of the women in his neighborhood and starts learning more about himself through them, and self discovery is the greatest gift a writer could ask for. The DVD has no special features but is double-sided to fit both a widescreen and a full screen version of the film.
