Happy Days Season 3 DVD Review:
Season three of Happy Days is where the show turned into the one we all remember. The theme song we can all sing along to was added in the third season, the Fonz was promoted to a regular character after making appearances in the first two season, and there’s all sorts of guest stars. This is the show you can stay up all night and watch on Nick at Nite (if they’d stop playing Wings and Rosanne reruns).
If you like the Fonz, and many people do, there’s plenty of him here. The third season is when Garry Marshall and the producers realized that the Henry Winkler character was on his way to being an icon, and on the seasons first program, had him move into the Cunningham household. Fonzie also teaches Mrs. Cunningham how to tango, plays a cop, sells encyclopedias door to door, and of course, jumps over various objects with his motorcycle.
Happy Days holds up perfectly. There are some hokey moments, but for the most part the show is still one of the best sitcoms from the golden age of the sitcom. The dorky Richey Cunningham, played by Ron Howard, and the Fonz have a great dynamic and Fonzie’s relationship to Mr. C works perfectly to comic effect as well. Marshall and co. really did know what they were doing, and if you look past the two layers of nostalgia, there will still be one of the finest sitcoms on record.
Besides a generic clip show, the four DVD set is lacking in extras. Another problem that people had with previous DVD releases is still here, and it’s important to point out at the get go. All the classic 50’s hits originally played in 1975 are missing. Due to music rights, it was too expensive for this release. Though this is disappointing, I personally don’t mind it too much. The replacements weren’t awful and if you’re watching the DVD for the characters and the laughs, it shouldn’t concern you.
Happy Days Season 3 gives you a lot of Happy Days. There’s not much else to it. If that’s what you’re looking for, it’s a good buy. If you want some insight into the show, a commentary, a little documentary on the phenomenon that was the Fonz, or anything like that, you may be disappointed. There are plenty of classic moments here though. And seeing how there may not be an ultimate box anytime in the future, it’s a safe buy too. It’s a good show to pop into the DVD player and escape a little. It’s comfort food without a doubt.
