Wings - The Fifth Season DVD Review:
Wings Season 5 recently flew into stores. However, if I had my way, it would fly right out the window. I originally wanted to watch the DVD out of nostalgia. It brings back old memories of when I was very young and I used to watch it with my mom. Of course, back then I didn’t understand what was going on.
Somehow Wings managed to disappoint me. I thought the memories associated with it would make the episodes funnier than they were, instead they weren’t as funny as I remembered. The fifth season DVD pack is not the best because it has purely the seasons. There are no extra features and that hardly makes it worth purchasing the DVD.
A couple episodes that stand out as being especially disappointing were “Stop in the Name of Love,” “Terminal Jealousy” and “2 Good 2 B 4 Gotten.” The other episodes on the four DVDs are tolerable, but produce no laughter from an audience – at least by today’s standards. The ideas of the shows are clever, the dialog is interesting, and the actors a great, but it just seems so flat.
In “Stop in the Name of Love,” Brian and Alex try to abstain from having sex and moving too fast. It’s full of beginnings of jokes, but never really seems to deliver a laugh. The story really is a good concept and I think Steven Weber does a good job with timing, but not with his actual delivery. An odd situation to be in for sure! The whole episode just seemed to be on one level the whole time and did not lead to any climactic ending.
Even worse was “Terminal Jealousy” and partly because Roy is my least favorite character. Yes, he was made into one of those characters you’re supposed to love to hate, but he has no redeeming qualities. The only thing that makes watching him tolerable is that he always gets what he deserves from the things he does. In this episode, he is the reason anything happens. Nothing good happens, which makes him so unlikeable. He manipulated people the whole episode, just to see if he could. He was successful, but it was not entertaining.
I just recently watched “2 Good 2 B 4 Gotten.” The problem with my reviewing this episode is that it was so bad that I don’t remember it. I just remember dragging myself through it to get to this point.
As amazing as the show might have been in the early 1990s when it started, it’s that bland as of 2007.
I try to give each DVD a fair chance, however some of them still manage to disappoint. This would be one of them. Especially because there are no special features, the DVD seems to last so much longer. I’m almost certain it was not met that way. I would love to love this season, but I think it really did go down after a couple seasons and no one had the heart to pull the plug on the show that had the potential to be so much better.
