Get Smart DVD Review:

Who could forget the comedic genius of Don Adams in what would become his most famous character, the bumbling secret agent Maxwell Smart in the show, Get Smart. Paired up with the beautiful Agent 99, Maxwell (codename Agent 86) takes on the evil syndicate KAOS and the fearsome Siegfried. Equipped with his poorly designed gadgets and gizmos, including his famous shoe phone, as well as mission specific gear such as grenade cuff-links in one episode and the fallible “cone of silence,” Smart would fall backwards into solving his missions, often through the assistance of Agent 99. In a similar fashion, Maxwell Smart would often get mixed up in the confusions of being a spy and would mistakenly reveal his true identity to his foes.

Nick at Nite presentations on Nickelodeon through the early 90s introduced Get Smart to an entirely new audience. Even now, over 30 years later, the jokes still work, be it Maxwell’s shoe phone ringing during the opera or his being mistaken for a KAOS agent during a secret meeting. Throughout it all Maxwell Smart is either too confident or too dim-witted, or perhaps both to realize what is really going on, but boy could he fake it. Smart had several catchphrases on the show. When Chief explained that his mission would be his most treacherous mission to date, Max’s only response was often “And loving every minute of it.” You can still hear Max Smart’s voice in a moment of danger saying something like “Ah yes the old exploding bowl of fruit trick.” The Get Smart series is as funny and poignant today as it was back then.

This 25 DVD, that’s right, 25 DVDs in this box set opens up like the famed entrance of Control from the opening credits, with multiple doors, ultimately revealing the 5 seasons each in their own smaller collection. Each season is packed with bonus features that include audio commentaries with Agent 99 (Barbara Feldon), series co-creators Mel Brooks and Buck Henry as well as Don Rickles and many more. Other special features include featurettes from various aspects of the show’s history, including “Barbara Feldon: Real Model to Role Model,” “The Secret History of Get Smart,” and “Spooks, Spies, Gadgets and Gizmos” among others. This collection also includes blooper reels, promos and footage from the 1967 Emmy Awards. Also included are several tributes to Don Adams, including one from Barbara Feldon, as well as footage from his 75th birthday party at the Playboy mansion. Each season also has a “dossier” styled insert that gives just a little more insight into the television series that warmed the hearts of all those who worked on the show and all of those who viewed it. All together, there are over 65 hours of Get Smart episodes and Get Smart related bonus features in this magnificent box set.

All 138 episodes are presented in full frame and in stereo sound and are rated G. The footage appears as if it has been re-mastered and cleaned up, presenting the series in a manner that gives the show the justification that it deserves. This brilliant series and this lovingly well-compiled DVD box set will have fans of all ages laughing for years to come.
