Jackass: Number Two (2006) DVD Review:
Jackass 2.5
Usually when a film is released on DVD with a fraction added to whatever film in the franchise it may be, this is just a sign that some extra footage has been tacked onto the film to make it longer and help with DVD sales. Many films have done this, but when the Jackass films are released this way it means something else entirely. These boys have graduated far beyond the simple skits of the MTV show and officially have too much time and money on their hands. As a result many of the skits, stunts and jokes filmed for the second Jackass film were shot without careful preparation, and often failed. There was so much extra footage from these failed gags it was enough to fill a second DVD, hence Jackass 2.5.
Even though the DVD is marketed to have you believe that the stunts on the DVD were removed from the film because they were too shocking, the real fact is that they were mostly removed because of the fact that they didn’t work out the way everyone had hoped. This is even corroborated in Jackass 2.5 with interviews from the cast mixed with the deleted segments. They all give reasons for the stunts failing and by the end of Jackass 2.5 five it begins to feel like bonus footage that should have just been included on a new special edition DVD of the sequel. At least then the film would be included, which was far better than any of the footage in the 64 minute 2.5.
This isn’t to say that all of the footage is wasted, or even that Jackass 2.5 doesn’t retain some of the humor from Number Two. Most of the best segments are on the first half of the film, including some brutal behind-the-scenes footage of on-set pranks. Nobody is safe at any time on a Jackass set, to the point where Johnny Knoxville was even urinating on director Jeff Tremaine while they were filming. They are absolutely vicious to each other, often inflicting senseless pain because it makes them, and hopefully the audience, laugh. This also includes torturing each other with stunts as well, especially when they can use fears and phobias against each other. Preston’s fear of heights and large appearance makes him ideal for a King Kong stunt with model airplanes, and the footage of Bam being tortures with a snake is re-used in 2.5 as well.
There are even more special features on the DVD than there is footage in the film, including a random featurette about the making of the video game based off of the show and films. There are plenty more deleted stunts, but the rejects from the film of reject stunts are mostly a waste of time. There are only a few of any real worth. There is also a making-of featurette and a photo gallery.
