Wallace And Gromit: Three Amazing Adventures DVD Review:

Although somewhat late considering Wallace and Gromit won an Academy Award for Best Animated Film with 2005’s Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, this collection includes the three short films which started their career. These are the three short films that this stop-animation duo was best known for before the award winning feature-length film, and they are every bit as valuable. Although these films have been available before, this new package also comes with two bonus episodes of Shaun the Sheep, brought into life with A Close Shave and later used for commercials. Now, with all of these short films combined, the running time has far surpassed the length of a feature with over three hours of footage.

The three main shorts included are A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers, and A Close Shave, and each of these shorts are listed like newspaper articles on Wallace’s newspaper on the DVD menu. It is a clever setup and by choosing any of these articles, or the special features artless, a submenu within the newspaper is brought up to make the next choice. Each of the shorts are included with commentary tracks available and the special features are filled with options.

A Grand Day Out introduces us to Wallace’s love of cheese when he decides to spend his holiday traveling to the moon, which is made of cheese. Wallace is an incredible inventor, but his careless nature often gets him and his dog Gromit into trouble. Fortunately Gromit is smart enough to bail them out. A Grand Day Out is the simplest of the films, filled more with the antics and gags, whereas the others tend to play up the suspense elements even more. In The Wrong Trousers Wallace rents out his room to a suspicious penguin, and once again Gromit is there to save the day. A Close Shave introduces Shaun, a sheep that Wallace and Gromit save from a sheep rustling mystery they fall into when they set up a window-cleaning business.

The special features include a series of Wallace and Gromit Cracking Contraptions, each a short with some of their inventions and a little humor. These are only a few minutes long, but they are worth the effort. There are also the two Shaun the Sheep episodes, which aren’t quite as good as Wallace and Gromit but still worth a look, if only to laugh at the replacement man and his dog. There are also featurettes for The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave and one in general about the famed clay duo.
