Lake Placid 2 (2008) Synopsis:

There seems to be trouble once again at Lake Placid, when it is discovered that the lake is infested with gigantic crocodiles.

Lake Placid 2 (2008) DVD Review:

Lake Placid 2 is the aptly named sequel to Lake Placid, a film that was released in 1999. Lake Placid was the story of a sleepy lake community plagued by a mysterious lake monster, although it is later discovered that the monster is actually a pair of crocodiles that have been raised and cared for by the crazy old woman by the lake, Delores Bickerman (Betty White).

Lake Placid 2 continues the story of that sleepy lake community, taking place a few years after the ending of the first film. The story of the crocodiles has become simple folklore within the town. There is a new sheriff in town, Sheriff Riley, played by John Schneider (Bo Duke, Dukes of Hazzard). The crocodile myth resurfaces when a researcher is plucked from his boat in the presence of his colleague. A member of the Fish and Wildlife department, Emily, who is also a woman with whom Sheriff Riley has a somewhat tumultuous history, comes to town to investigate these allegations. Together they go to the lake to investigate the disturbance. While there, Emily discovers the severed head of the missing man. On the way back, the group stops by “crazy old Sadie’s” house, sister to the now deceased Delores Bickerman from the first film. Sadie proves to be a stubborn old woman who refuses to aid in the investigation. After their visit to Sadie’s proves fruitless, the team heads back to town, but they run into trouble by means of a hungry twenty-foot crocodile that destroys the Sheriff’s boat. As the team swims to shore, a seaplane flies overhead and lands, revealing poacher Sam MacMurray and his ally Ahmad. Almost immediately the team is attacked, on land this time, by the crocodile. They lose a few disposable characters in this altercation. As the team continues to try to solve the crocodile in the lake issue, it is revealed that Sadie has in fact been a part of the problem, feeding these giants hormone enhanced meat that has been rejected by the government. The plot thickens when it is revealed that there are four enormous crocodiles, and that two of them have mated, leaving a nest full of gigantic crocodile eggs.

Lake Placid 2 is a “made-for-TV-movie” for the Sci-Fi channel, a channel which has produced some decent, albeit campy creature features in the past. Lake Placid 2 can be described as anything but decent. The plot barely deviates from the original film; only a few names have been changed to make it different. To make the matter of an unoriginal script worse, any performances filmed, if there were any real performances on set, were lost when the entire film had to be rerecorded in a studio. No attempt was made to make it sound like anything other than bad voice over. In a similar manner, the “special effects” are pathetic; they look more like poorly animated photos than real or even passable crocodiles. The sharks in Jaws looked more believable.

The Lake Placid 2 DVD will be released as an Unrated version, which will include a completely irrelevant pair of scenes in which a group of nubile, naked campers are devoured whilst frolicking in the water.

The special features include a Behind the Scenes featurette, titled Sex, Guns and Croc-n-Roll. It is set to music and does not reveal any insight into the filmmaking process. There is also the Lake Placid 2 Guide to Surviving a Crocodile Attack, which is simply a self-referencing way to show the viewer once again the awful looking crocodile effects from the film. Lastly there is Lake Placid 2: The Gnawed Up Version, which basically fast forwards, complete with cheesy VHS fast forward sound effect, through any plot and stops to just show a topless girl or a crocodile attack.

The Lake Placid 2 DVD comes in Widescreen and features 5.1 surround sound as well as Spanish and French subtitles.
