Scenes Of A Sexual Nature (2006) DVD Review:
Set in one seemingly average day in London, Scenes of a Sexual Nature takes place entirely in one afternoon on Hampstead Heath. This is a place of leisure for an assortment of people with all different needs, and an ensemble cast of various characters display every variety imaginable, in the context of relationships. From the very beginning of the film it is obvious that love and relationships are the key, showing couples walking, sitting and holding hands together in the park-like atmosphere. Lovers break up on this afternoon, while others make significant choices together. Some will simply have a fight and others a divorce without a fight. There are gay, straight, young and old lovers alike, and they have that in common if nothing else.
Although characters are seen wandering in and out of other segments, essentially every character is given minimal time onscreen. The segments are sometimes completed and never returned to, but there is at least one segment that lasts nearly the entire afternoon. Without entering too deeply into the lives of these people we aren’t required to learn any extensive back-story about them, and this leaves open room for many truthful and humorous conversations. Scenes of a Sexual Nature digs right to the heart of each conversation, whether honest confrontation between man and wife or debates about adoption between a gay couple. It certainly is an invigorating change to have a film so boldly to the point, but this may also seem somewhat staged and phony at times.
The cast of the ensemble film is all-around perfect. Some of the casting may seem off, such as Ewan McGregor as one-half of the gay couple, but the performances are strong enough all around even when it is unexpected. Each performance seems too brief, as does the film. There are enough great ideas for couples in the park, from a mismatched first date to rejoined lovers of the past. Scenes of a Sexual Nature covers a majority of relationship types, but I still felt myself longing for more by the end.
The commentary on the DVD features director and producer Ed Blum joined by the writer Aschlin Ditta, who play off of each other well. There is also a making-of featurette and the theatrical trailer.
